0 – Blender Video Editing (Tutorial Introduction / Blender History)

This is the introductory video to my updated tutorial series on using the freely available, cross platform, Blender program. This series is designed to help novice users learn to utilize Blender to create state of the art YouTube videos.

If I can do it, anyone can do it!

Where to download the FREE Blender program: http://www.blender.org

**CORRECTION**

In the video I said that Blender is Free forever because it is open source. I misused the the term “Open Source.”

To clarify, Blender is licensed under the “GPL 2 or Higher.” This is a license that requires that any modifications to the source code, that are distributed to a 3rd party, be provided freely to the public – that was the “free” I was alluding to. Technically, there is nothing stopping a person from selling GPL software as long as they also give the same rights to everyone else. That means anyone can take the source code and give it away for free or sell it too.

Confused?

For those of you that would like to know more about “Open Source” Licensing, the GPL license, and the difference between “Free” Software and software that preserves your “Freedom”, check out the following links:

  1. Just wanted to say THANKS for the great tutorials you've done.  Also, check out "MEDIAINFO".  A great little tool for info on media files.  Comes in real handy at the TV station where I work.  Keep up the great work!!

  2. BRAVO!!! Excellent series that will help many people share video of events. ideas, emotions & more! I used Adobe for many years, but their profit model is ridiculous. Adobe stifles creativity in my opinion via high cost of ownership or monthly payment system that's draconian. OPEN-SOURCE products and the sharing of their capabilities to the masses should FREE the public from expensive software.

BLENDER was something I used in 3D work, but never really used the Video editing…your video series has helped me abandon several inefficient & expensive software programs for OPEN source solutions! Thanks again & keep up the good work, it's appreciated. (I am sharing open-source options with local school kids that can't afford Adobe & Microsoft "Rental" software…this video series will be shared with some local high schools 🙂

  3. Just a simple question. Does it possible to get a NODE INPUT that output result of the video editing sequencer (kind of nested comp as in AE). As this it can be blended with other source in the node tree???

  4. Excuse me, I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 and I can't download the last version of Blender, I stay on Blender 2.69. There is not update on the software library. I tried to download on Internet, then I didn't can unzip it ! Thanks to help me 🙂

  5. Thanks for your quick reply. I just tried the keyframe method… But no joy. 🙁 It seems no matter what I do I can't get those transitions to work! I even deleted and reinstalled Blender but that did not help. Could it be that I have changed some setting that is preventing fades from working?

  6. Hi Mikeycal… super tutorials!! With such a shortage on how to use Blender's VSE… thank God you have created this series of tuts. Quick question: I am using Blender 2.77 and have followed your steps for creating a fade-in from black at the beginning of video/audio strips I ripped from a DVD… but when I playback nothing happens. I've made sure I "select" the clips in the correct order… black first… video strip second… and have tried wipe, cross and gamma cross to no avail. I saw one post on the web that suspected this is a Blender bug of some sort. I would appreciate your take/guidance on this. If it helps I'm running Blender on a PC with 6 gigs of ram. Many thanks

  7. Thank for the tutorials, I could learn how to make video editing in an evening and I am now working on a trailer for my Kickstarter project.

Regarding adding subtitles on a video, I am not sure if you mention this somewhere, but I found it easier and more flexible to write the texts in a .png(s) and import these images in Blender.

  8. Funny enough I use Kdenlive, everything comes natural for me when I edit with it. However, Kdenlive gives me a headache when it comes to audio sync. There is ALWAYS a problem with it, and getting my hands on Kdenlive 15.XX isn't easy either, so… Might as well give this a try.

  9. I really like this series. But could you also do one using only Cycles? I learned the hard way that there is a bug when using VSE and Cycles compositor, the VSE overrides the Cycles compositor when using animation rendering.  TY

  10. I was wondering if you can help me mix two videos that are in different FPS. I record most of mine in 30fps and my friend sent me one I'd like to use in a combined video but its in 60FPS. Changing the FPS in the renderer only makes his video slow motion. Do you have a tutorial covering this type of issue? Thank you for your time. Love the tutorials so far !

  11. Hi Mikycal, great videos it is a pleasure to watch them.
Would you know if one can do noice reduction on rhe video track? I have some digitized 8mm film and would like to make them a bit smoother.

    Merry Christmas!
    Erik

  12. I've been trying to find a decent video editor for simple editing — Blender was too dauting for what I wanted to do. Tried some simple editor but none was good enough (crashed often or too complicated). Took a chance with your videos and was really surprised on how easy one can edit videos with Blender. Your teaching is really great and you really helped me find the right tool. Thanks a lot for this series!!!
