3D Software – Modo vs 3DS Max vs Maya vs Cinema 4D vs Rhino 3D

Today’s video is about 3D Modeling and Animation Software and how they stack against each other. This video includes The Foundry Modo, Autodesk 3DS MAX, Autodesk Maya, Maxon Cinema 4D, and Rhinoceros (Rhino 3D).

As requested, here are the specs of the PC that was used during the making of this video (I think).
Windows 7 x64
AMD FX-8350, Eight Core Processor clocked @ 4.2Ghz
16 GB DDR3-1600 Ram
8 TB Hard Drive, all spin disks (no SSDs or Hybrids)
2 GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 950 SC (I believe)

Modo (stylized as MODO, originally modo) is a polygon and subdivision surface modeling, sculpting, 3D painting, animation and rendering package developed by Luxology, LLC, which is now merged with and known as The Foundry. The program incorporates features such as n-gons and edge weighting, and runs on Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X platforms.

Autodesk 3ds Max, formerly 3D Studio Max, is a professional 3D computer graphics program for making 3D animations, models, games and images. It is developed and produced by Autodesk Media and Entertainment. It has modeling capabilities, a flexible plugin architecture and can be used on the Microsoft Windows platform. It is frequently used by video game developers, many TV commercial studios and architectural visualization studios. It is also used for movie effects and movie pre-visualization.

Autodesk Maya /ˈmɑːjə/, commonly shortened to Maya, is a 3D computer graphics software that runs on Windows, OS X and Linux, originally developed by Alias Systems Corporation (formerly Alias|Wavefront) and currently owned and developed by Autodesk, Inc. It is used to create interactive 3D applications, including video games, animated film, TV series, or visual effects. The product is named after the Sanskrit word Maya (माया māyā), the Hindu concept of illusion.

CINEMA 4D is a 3D modeling, animation and rendering application developed by MAXON Computer GmbH in Germany. It is capable of procedural and polygonal/subd modeling, animating, lighting, texturing, rendering, and common features found in 3D modelling applications.

Rhinoceros (typically abbreviated Rhino, or Rhino3D) is a commercial 3D computer graphics and computer-aided design (CAD) application software. Rhinoceros geometry is based on NURBS mathematical model, which focuses on producing mathematically precise representation of curves and freeform surfaces in computer graphics (as opposed to polygon mesh-based applications).

    Very soon, I'm gonna work this a graphic 3d software "E-ON". (They content Lumen Rt, Ozone, Vue, Plant Factory, Carbon scatter.) I'd love to have your opinion about it.
    What you think of this softwares? Compare to the Autodesk products or Maxon. Your opinion is important to me.

  2. in fact rhino is not designed for vfx field users.rhino is more about architecture design or industry desgin.The most obvious defference between rhino and other 3 softwares is that rhino is based on nurbs curves not polygons so they are two mind sets.rhino is really easy to learn and use if you have experience in autocad which is the most popular software in arch and industry design field.So i think it's unfair to say rhino is confusing and hard to learn .in addition,Rhino has many powerful plugins such as grasshopper that can help you design really complicated and beautiful paramatric design.i hope the imformationcan help those who want to learn rhino but fear to get frustrated.

  3. 7:48 Maya’s scripting is pretty terrible, and its Python implementation is just a straight transliteration of MEL.

    To see how scripting is done, compare Blender, which implements full DOM scriptability: all the objects in a Blender document are directly accessible as Python objects.

  4. Rhino is not in the same category. It is a high precision NURBS CAD program that can be used for product and architectural production. The rest are for visuals production mainly using polygon and sub-division… Lot of differences.

  5. I like MODO's selection tools. 3DS Max and Maya are industry giants. Cinema is just meh. Rhino lives in a world of its own. If you're new to 3d modelling or just looking to see if you like it, download a copy of blender and do a beginners tutorial series. Overall the concepts of poly modelling will translate to other programs.

  6. These are all kind of specialized for different things and honestly you might need many of them: C4D is a great mograph app with a bazillion things you can do with particles and, procedural animation and simulations. It's really easy to jump into and make something that looks nice. It's weak in the modeling department and in the rigging department but it can do it. The X particles plugin for C4D alone is a huge advantage. Bodypaint is a so-so solution to UV editing but traditionalUV editing is kind of a pain in C4D. For a one-stop shop that can let you really work solo Cinema 4D is where it's at. Modo has awesome modeling tools that you can use to build your own tools, snap planes to models rather than always working to 3 viewports. It's not designed to be a one stop shop though: it's designed more specifically for modeling, while texturing is and animation is shuffled off to other apps and/or game engines. It's great for games and VFX and now being owned by the Foundry integration with Nuke and Mari makes it a VFX essential. Maya can do everything alright but it's unintuitive at first until you get used to marking menus and hotkeys. I love the navigation situation in Maya but ultimately dumped it and started teaching students C4D because Maya is so very very unstable and a lot of the tools and processes (like cloning) are just tremendously outdated and clunky. 3DS max is no longer a consideration because it's Windows only these days not being multiplatform when everyone else is makes 3DS Max an unnecessary stumbling block in production . Rhino is a CAD program and not really applicable.

    I Choose Cinema 4D but I'm exploring Modo and either Mari or substance to speed up C4D's modeling and texturing deficiencies.

  7. Just to clear the air. Anyone can tend to be biased towards what they know and understand better(the author being obviously biased towards Maya!). Because of that, most people will be unable to offer a reliable, unbiased, as crisp as possible of an opinion which other could find useful. This is no exception.

  8. Dude. i am new to 3D modeling. I have tryed to make a BF 109 ( Plane ) in free software but i am looking more into movie making destruction sences ( PLane crashes, Particles are flying everywhere, buiding collapsing and etc ). What program would you recomend for this. And i am not a professional at all. Still using basic tools. Price is not a problem if you understand ( Yarrr! )
