For everybody who is still searching, use the Bisect Tool while in Edit Mode — Under Mesh Tools -> Bisect and press F6 to change values. (google it)
How do I delete ALL the vertices in the box-selected area, including the vertices that are behind other vertices in the selected area? I find myself trying to remove parts of other people's models and their models are so vertex-dense that I end up box-selecting and deleting the vertices in that selected area up to at least 100 times.

You didn't actually cut it in half. You just deleted half, which is not the same thing. You can cut a sphere in half by box selecting in wireframe and hitting P and selecting materials:
