7 tips for black & white street photography with Alan Schaller

Black & white images and street art photography go together like two peas in a pod. But they both can be very challenging, even for experienced photographers.
That’s why we asked a real pro for advice: Alan Schaller! The London based street photographer shoots exclusively in black & white and is the co-founder of Street Photography International, a platform for talented yet unrepresented photographers.
Alan knows what black & white photography really needs, different angles and views for example, to add a nice twist to your images. Find out more awesome tips from Alan in our video, which has been created in collaboration with Leica.

  1. Great photography! However as a long time film photographer, I find that most Monochrom images I see on screen have hardly any shadow details. They are very graphic, contrasty and punchy which is fine if that is what one wants. But I believe film negative renders much better shadows (digital is like slide film, it blows the highlights).

  2. One single picture at your choice of Tony Ray Jones erases from the earth in 1/125 of a second this nice looking streetphotographer guy and remember to all of us, lovers of great photography, what this art is like! Alan sorry to be so straightforward and I don't want to be rude but your pictures are good for the year-end essay in some photography schools.Of course you are a clever entepreneur but this has nothing to do with photography. Nothing personal, of course.

  3. Thanks Alan for such valuable tips. Question: what standard camera setting you usually set when you do the street in daylight or night (i.e. the ISO, Shutter Speed, and f), please share thanks …. regards,

  4. Im glad I watched this, the thumbnail with the juicy Leica looked a bit pretentious for me but this dude can shoot. Great stuff that was a good video. That shot in the club with the lasers was fire, absolute fire.
