In this video I go over how to model, texture, and render a crate. This video is focused on beginners, every step of the process is shown. I go over some of the modeling tools available in Maya. The video shows how to : make the model, apply materials, assign textures, create a normal map in Photoshop, creating a specular map, lighting, rendering.

Here’s a list of useful shortcuts used in maya.

W- move
E- rotate
R- scale
G- repeat last command
Ctrl + g – group
q – exit tool
b- soft selection
shift + . – grow selection
alt + b – change background color
f – fit to selection
ctrl + a – open attribute editor/channel box
ctrl + delete – deletes an edge loop( 2014 version and up only)
1 – standard mode
2- subdivision mode with cage
3- subdivision mode
4- wireframe
5 – shaded mode
6- texture mode
p- parent

    Hey 3dEx ! Been watching your stuff for quite some time now and I love it ! Helps me out alot ! But, I've been trying to download that plugin you put in the description and it won't load in my version of Photoshop (CC 2015.5)… Any advice for that ? I'll appreciate it, tnx !

    hello sir,
    im stuck in that interactive split tool…im doing the way you said like..select a point n then hold the click and select the point n all..but in my case nothing such happening…im selecting the tool and then the points but it is not selecting anything…it is like my interactive tool is not working properly….what to do???

    i didn't install photoshop in my laptop so i am stuck in middle. can you guide me? without using photoshop how can i apply texture?

    Besides this being a good tutorial, you always should be aware of putting overlapping UVs on this box, if you like want to use it in a game engine with lightmaps. In that case you should definetly have separate uv parts for each face.

    This is kinda embarrassing but at 1:57 you select a setting called "keep faces together", which does not appear in my program.. I am using the student version on a Mac book pro.

    this might be that im using 2012, but when I press G to apply planar mapping to the other sides of the crate, it grows the selection instead. Is there a step I missed or is it because of my older version of maya?

    Really nice tutorial! You know you can do shift D to duplicate your middle piece instead of copying each time and rotating it.

    Just a tip! I had a problem where the shift+. wouldn't work, and found out the problem was the keyboard layout (Using PT-PT layout). I found out that shift+< would so the same thing. (It pretty much outputs the ">" character, which I assume is over the dot in your computer layout). Anyways, thanks for the tutorial, it's pretty awesome 🙂

    When I add the plane and add the "use background" attribute I do all the steps you do but my crate still looks like it's floating through space. Any idea what's going on?

    when i try and put the other textures on the box they dont copy exactly like the previous ones.  i have two that are perfect but the others are not.  i checked the texturing box and it shows red triangles. is that pieces of broken goemetry?

    Hi, in Maya 2015 if i dont find the Split poligon tool in the Edit Mesh. I try to search it in others places but i dont know where it could be. Can you explain me where the split poligon is? please

    when you were duplicating the planks you made, after you did one if you then press shit+D it would duplicate special so you would not have to waste time rotating a lot. its a bit different when doing the top of the crate. just letting you know just is case you was not aware of it. thanks by the way i learned a couple of small but new tricks and understood somethings a bit more

    can gimp be a good alternative to Photoshop im using it for the tutorial and it is working fine but im not sure if i can use it for all texturing?

    first maya tutorial I finished watching! I actually stop working @26:34 because my maya attribute editor doesn't show those tabs, instead they shows a bunch of random tabs and I can't do anything with it. If you know what happen, that would be awesome!  I however learn very much from your vid already. Thanks

    Just wondering in the Edit Mesh tab i dont seem to have Split Polygon Tool. Is there anyway to get it ?

    Hey Irvin, near the start, you extruded the sides inwards to give them depth, on my maya, the side won't go in, but only come out. Is the something I need to select to allow me to do this?

    I have brand new install Maya 2013 on Pc. Everything going great first try(intermediate 3ds exp) till @ 11:05 is called "Interactive Split Tool" on my version. but it does not move around. It's origin is the corner to start and i can not click the line to slide a vert up and down to click a starting point. instead it seems to snap to verts and the center point of the edge line. I have messed around and messed around. I am stumped I really hope you can help. googling has lead me nowhere.

    im having trouble with split polygon tool, when i press enter the lines dissapear and also they dont go where i need them to be on the sides, any hints on that?
