Autodesk Maya 2013 Tutorial – Character Modeling Part 1- Box modeling the body, arms, and legs.

In this introductory tutorial I go over how to start a boxed modeled character. I start by showing you how to import and work with an image plane to use as reference. I will then move on to creating an initial primitive shape which will be used to model the character. Many of maya’s modeling tools are covered throughout the series.

  1. Hello! 3dEX. I can't understand what you did after "connect components", did you remove the left side of the cube or what? Sorry, I'm not good in english, so I didn't understand what you say in this step.

  2. Great tutorial as always.. I like how you cover all the basic things (modeling, uv, texturing etc.)… and do all from scratch. Great for people who have just the basic understanding of maya like me. Thank you!

  3. Maya 2016 seems to have different reflection settings… It just doesn't work the same way and I'm pretty confused. Anyone know how to get it to work like this 6:28?

Duplicate special seems to work differently as well

  4. Quick question. As you did in your video, I clicked the bottom face and attempted to use the move tool to try to separate it a little. However, my move tool seems to be actually scaling the object as I try to pull it away from each other using the red arrow like you did. I've tried to figure this out on my own, but I have no idea what could be causing this.

  5. Hey man, I'm having a problem extruding at the 9:55 part of the shape. When I do it, the top of my edges are very jagged and sharp instead of it being a rounder shape such as yours. Have I extruded before having a preference enabled/unabled, or am I extruding something before finishing a piece of something else? I can get through manually shaping it that way but, I know I'll have a problem like this in the future as I have had, still haven't solved it. – Using Maya 2015

  6. Sir, im one of your subscriber and i download all ur videos related to this luigi character (modeling and mapping). If i may request, can you please make a rigging and animating tutorial for this luigi too? Thanks. 🙂

  7. To those of you who are having problems after duplicating (The step at 5:55) with the shading, I've found a solution.

My problem was that when I duplicated the object, the new side came out black and the inside was gray. This is actually a pretty easy fix. Because it is flipped using -1 for x, it's basically turning the entire object inside out.

To fix this, go to 'Lighting' in the view port (same menu we used to import the image plane) and check the box that says "Two Sided Lighting". Problem solved!
