This video shows how to start the rigging process by creating joints( or a skeleton) for our model and set the correct joint orientations for them. Rigging is a crucial step to getting your characters ready to be animated. This video teaches the basics and clear, easy to follow, steps that any 3D enthusiast can follow. This video has been made specifically for beginners, but can be followed by any knowledge level.

W- move
E- rotate
R- scale
G- repeat last command
q – exit tool
b- soft selection
shift + . – grow selection
alt + b – change background color
f – fit to selection
ctrl + a – open attribute editor/channel box
ctrl + delete – deletes an edge loop( 2014 version and up only)
1 – standard mode
2- subdivision mode with cage
3- subdivision mode
4- wireframe
5 – shaded mode
6- texture mode

  1. One important thing I forgot to mention was when placing the joints for the arms there should be a bit of a bend on the elbow just like there is at the knee for the foot. Leave any questions you have in the comments below!

  2. Error Script tip: Make sure you place your Comet Joint Script in the correct folder location. To notice if you have this error, your script history will tell you that it cannot find the script and give info on what files it's looking at. Place the Comet Joint Script on where it's searching at.

  3. @3dEx Is it ever okay to have every joint that lines up with the world's 3 axes? Where every joint has an x axis that points in the same direction, every y axis points in the same direction and every z axis points in the same direction?

  4. Hey y'all, make sure to type in "cometJointOrient();" (without the quotation marks) when you get to the script editor part. I kept typing a colon ( : ) instead of a semicolon ( ; )and it came up with a syntax error. Hope this helps, happy rigging!
