Currently I design using Autodesk's Inventor program, however I am interested in creating my own visual effects. What do you guys think; is Maya the best one to aquaint myself with? And is it the only software you would need? or does it depend on a lot of plugins? I'm not really interested in creating animated characters, just effects with light and motion. Any advice would be appreciated. This type of thing always looks daunting at first : )
