Blender 2.61 Ocean Simulator – Cycles Render

Added rocks and man did those reflections add time… 2 mins per frame. 500f @ 25fps. Music by me. Inspired by blenderarsenal’s ocean mod tutorial found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6e7vn69Vr4 The sky is an HDR Image found online (but am making some stunning new ones in Vue 10.5), the trick to the water is leave it completely clear and place below the water (ground plane region) a picture on a plane of a ocean surface like a pic of Bora Bora from above or what ever water type or color you’re after. This scene used 8 planes for the surface (4y,4x) which was very taxing to your system.

  1. Do better, its good but its pretty bad. Make the water less smooth and more misty, make the waves not go through the rocks, make the waves smaller, use more realistic waves, etc. :3

  2. Metallic spheres over water (with mountains)… That brings back memories of beginning at doing 3D stuff with Bryce 4. Of course that rendered so slow you could never animate it like this.

    Transitioning to Blender now from Carrara, but anyone who did 3D long enough probably knows what I'm talking about.

  3. Blender is open, the developers listen, the community is amazing, it's a small download, cycles is shaping up to be a renderer to be reckoned with..etc..etc. There are many artists using blender professionally, mostly commercial work.

    If you were a serious artist you would know demo reels are unimportant. Blender is a fine package. Houdini is like any other 3D software, useless without a talented artist at the helm. There are things I love about Houdini (the L-system is amazing), every parameter is easily expression driven, native RIB support…etc..etc. At the same time you have no say in what features are added and while it's accessible to the masses, it's available in a limited way.

Besides, the original argument you held didn't even have anything in its context to hint that you were comparing blender in the first place, I'm not even sure I'm talking to an adult, the more oyu comment, the more I'm thinking that I'm probably talking to somebody that only looks at cgi on youtube rather than get his/her hands on it, done the research on it, or have submitted academic articles on the subject. I'll end the so called argument right here, I'd rather talk to a knowledgeable person.

  6. I have already seen many different show reels of many different programs. My thought," they better be like that if they are professional programs that cost many thousands of dollars" There are many different factors for comparison when it comes down to comparing 3d rendering programs. Based on your previous comments, I'm not sure you're even a graphics design artist. If you are, it would benefit to know the strengths and weaknesses of each program.

The "sintel" open movie project was made with blender's internal rendering engine, now blender has cycles, I think it will be cool to what else comes out in the future ( I didn't care for mango). Go look at some of those short movies, they were made for a free program, and for a free program they're not half bad. Go ahead and look at the art gallery at blender's website, and keep in mind that it hasn't been updated since 2007 🙂

  8. Who said you didn't know anything about it? Where did I say that? It's easy to know a little something and to find a video based on those key words. I know it's not much to go by (lol), but your channel doesn't have very much evidence of you knowing your way around blender to the extent to which you cay say it's not good.
