When animating a bending arm,the mesh deformation around the elbow doesn’t look, most of the times, realistic enough
In this video tutorial we present a workaround through using “vertex shape keys” (also called “corrective shape keys” ) for re-shaping the bent arm and ,therefore, giving it a nice, realistic deformation

  1. If you're having problems with an armature's deformation, corrective shape keys only hide the actual problem. What that problem is happens to be that the model's skinning happens to be set incorrectly. The trick to proper skinning is to make sure that the weights of the vertices are set in such a way, moving the bone causes the model to deforms correctly.

This isn't impossible, I might add; models within professional fames typically don't use corrective shape keys, instead, relying on proper skinning in its place. As an example, look at the Pikachu model from Pokémon X and Y, and you'll notice that thought was put into the weights of their skin. They never even go 100%, save for the weights of the bones meant to animate entire body parts.

  2. When you build a complex chain with an FK/IK switch you may consider building a secondary rig that will be used to follow these mechanism bone and then set a copy transform from this chain to your deformation born.

When a bone have a copy transform modifier, it records any transformation it is being submited to as a local tranformation hence you can source it for your drivers to work.

  3. Wow, really awesome tutorial. I had always these problems with limbs and this technique is pretty useful.
But where is that background noise coming from? Sound like a water heater or something…

  4. От чего может быть, что нет плавного перехода от одного ключа к другому, а он резко вдруг срабатывает при преодолении определенной границы? И еще момент, кисть в расправленном состоянии сразу с деформированным бицепсом.

  5. In the part where you select averaged value, why when I play around with those settings the value changes to 0 and it stops working? Even if I change it back to averaged value it stays at 0. I have to delete the driver and redo everything.
