* 3 Essential Tips for Creating Any Material in Blender* –

Hello artists, in this Blender Displacement map tutorial, we will see how to use displacement map in blender.

We will first learn what is displacement map and displacement mapping. Then how to make displacement map in photoshop.

We will start by opening a stone wall texture in photoshop and see how to make displacement map from texture by manipulating some values and using tools such as Levels,Brightness and Contrast, Gaussian Blur etc. and we will learn why to use them.

After learning how to make displacement map in photoshop, we will jump into 3d stuff and learn how to use displacement map we created in photoshop in blender by using the “Displace modifier”.
We’ll be using the texture (displacement map) we created within photoshop and see how we can achieve the result of displacement mapping by manipulating values of displace modifier and how to refine it further.

This Blender Displacement map tutorial will help you to make your own displacement maps for your creations and use it in any 3d software.

Blender displacement mapping is very easy to use and can be used in blender internal rendering engine or Cycles rendering engine also.
You can also use displacement map baking in future.

This MF is running blender on a supercomputer I guess. He's getting 60 fps in rendered mode.

This tutorial SUCKS. It explains almost NOTHING, it leaves out possible errors, and it doesn't even always work with the newer versions anyways. With thousands of tutorials available, this should be deleted and redone without the hideous music and with ACTUAL INSTRUCTION instead of lazy text overlays which explain more about Photoshop (which NO ONE NEEDS help with) than it does about BLENDER (which the title CLAIMS the tutorial covers).
Waste of time, find someone who actually understands how to TEACH like Brackeys or Jimmy Vegas, because this one is pure trash. No offense.

Is displacement maps and height maps the same? And what if I like to use the nodes is there a way to displace the textures? Or it only works in texture properties….

doesnt work, it displace the plane in a straight lines from top to bottom instead of displacing in regards to the rocks

nice vid! i've been trying to displace an image i have (and others), but for some reason, when viewing it as a solid, it only shows the center (say 4×4 of 8×8) of the image with all the sides cut away (basically it looks like i zoomed in to the center portion). In texture mode, i have the full image, but just not in solid mode. I've really stumped on this one. Any ideas why this happens?

Nice tutorial! I would appreciate if you make another one regarding how a displacement map is used in a character creation workflow. For example, since displacement maps need enough subdivisions of the base mesh to work properly is it wise to use them in order to make a low poly model look like high res mesh? Because in this case, we end up again with a model of many polygons except if we settle for only the baked normal maps. I am a little bit confused…

could you use this to make crude buildings by using facade blueprints?

Now with the new version, I strongly recommend using adaptive option in subsurf modifier. It subdivides more the closer geometry is to camera, and less farther on. Saves a lot of polys and render time.

Wow, this video of yours is also amazing, thorough and simple. I can't wait to add this to my photorealistic models, now that I know how to use bump mapping, normal mapping and displacement mapping all my models will begin to look incredible! Thank you for this video.

    fantastic. two questions.
when would you choose displacement over bump maps?

and, what artistically abstract uses have you seen for these techniques? any exempels? best regards
