This Blender tutorial shows how to make a model of a pawn chess piece. There are several ways you could make the piece, this method is straightforward for beginners. The method involves extruding a cylinder and scaling the extrusion.
The method makes a relatively low polygon count model (low number of faces). High polygon models are more shapely. If you made a complete chess set with high polygon count models, you would need a very powerful computer to process the faces in real time.
There is a second part of tutorial that shows how to make a higher polygon count model.
The steps are –
Set up a background image of a pawn.
Add a cylinder and scale it.
In edit mode, extrude and scale to match the background image.
Add a sphere for the top of the pawn.
The image file and the finished model can be downloaded from my website –
