Blue Sky Photography | Landscape Photography on a Cloudless Day

What a spring we have been having! But while many have been enjoying the sunshine it can be difficult for us photographers.

Many landscape photographers believe that clear, cloudless skies make for boring photographs and that the harsh shadows created by direct sunlight create too much contrast in a scene.

So what are we supposed to do? Stay and home? Of course not!

In this video I share my approach to blue sky photography and explain why when the sun is high in the sky I switch to black and white.

  1. Really fun vlog Chris–great to see you out having so much fun. I quite like the very first shot you took with the cotton grass. A bit unusual for you given the lack of a strong subject, but it works so well. I think the shot with the pool is my fave from this lot. Cracking shot mate! πŸ‘ California blue skies have been in full force with a recent temperature spike to 37/97 degrees which is not to my taste. Had a very unusual thunder storm overnight which was a a welcome sight. Hoping to get out with my camera soon. Cheers, Jeff 😊

  2. I have enjoyed following your channel for about 3 months now. Always love your stuff. I just started into photography and bought the canon M-50 before I found your channel and your use of that camera encourages me I made a wonderful choice for my first camera. Thanks again for the amazing stories and photos!

  3. You can always tell when there is enjoyment behind the camera, I enjoy all your videos but certain ones always shine through and this was one of them! I love the sound of your plan to split the videos into 2 groups. Whilst i'm sure both sets will be great I am looking forward to the videos out walking with a small light camera as that is what appeals to me the most.
Loved the photos todays, I also personally find the water usually adds an extra something to a photo! Anyway just got in after a night shift and I am a few videos behind this week so onto the next! Thank you! Take care!

  4. Interesting that the type of photos you took in this video seem to reflect your more relaxed approach and reduced stress of having to film quite so much B roll. Love the photo of the pool. Definitely the best from what appears to have been a very rewarding morning.

  5. Quite a walk about Chris. Do enjoy the voice overs and the thought process you put forward. Also wonder about your thought process when editing the black and white images. Wonderful video, can be daunting when trying new things.
Loved the image with the sheep!

  6. Blue Sky Photography… living in Southern Arizona I’ve started calling that β€œNaked Sky” as there’s absolutely nothing of interest above the horizon. Great for B&W dark sky though.

  7. Chris, I echo these positive comments about the video. It was excellent, it was well paced, it kept me engaged as I followed the story of what you were trying to accomplish that day. It felt like I was walking with you. The shots were great and it was again a big encouragement to get out and take some shots of my own. That is what I am looking for in YouTube Landscape Photographers. I don't need a grand adventure, just the insight into someone else looking for shots in their local area. Thanks for taking the time to create this content.

  8. What a super upbeat video. Nice to see the B&W photos. It shows you can take photos at any time of day. I especially liked the image of the field with the tracks going to the horizon – 9:09. I doubt it would work as a color photo. I think a workshop in the spring of 2021 is a splendid idea.

  9. This may sound incongruous but those b&w shots of the cotton grass patterns remind me of the evocative prairie shots by the American photographer Laura Gilpin (1891 – 1979). Controlled contrast and a sense of loneliness (her young woman looking into a hazy distance must be one of the all time greats imo) on a broad canvas make your shots outstanding.

  10. Great to see you enjoying your photography Chris & getting pleasure out of what your photographing whilst entertaining & educating us… Some great images & views in the vlog… Sounds a great idea of splitting the vlogs to retain your content & enjoy your photography what doing it… πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ looking forward to both πŸ€—

  11. Hi Chris: I loved seeing your enthusiasm about creating images during a blue sky day. I really like to hear your comments about possibly using this area to hold some workshops. Hopefully, when Karen & I come to the Lake District in the Fall 2021 you can take us to this area in addition to other areas in the Lake District. I am also excited to hear that you are taking two approaches to your channel utilizing a DSLR and a mirrorless camera. I think that this will be a significant plus to building your channel. Keep safe! Cheers, Keith (Canada)

  12. Nice video Chris , ive loved this collection of your local area seeing different scenery contrasts but it will be good to see you back in the lakes πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ».

  13. Another really good video Chris. I am really enjoying the black and white. I'm also glad that you are demonstrating how shooting handheld with a smaller camera doesn't equal inferior photographs. Keep up the great work and stay safe.

  14. That voice over worked very well. So good to hear you enjoyed yourself. Shooting hand held and wandering has a certain freedom about it. Also a good idea to split the vlog types. Like it Chris πŸ‘πŸ‘
