  1. 4:39 – Instead of interactive split try doing a bevel and then triangulate for smoothing object. But I cannot think of a time where I would need to do a boolean and then smooth the object. Why not just edit the polygons into the desired shape if the object is still a low-poly cage? For example the shape created here can be made by creating a 3×3 plane, deleting selected boxes and extruding upwards.

If the boolean is complex, it will take longer to manually tessellate the shapes with the split tool than to just start from scratch (via simple extrusions or nurbs bi-rail) and position the edge flow where you want it.

Still, I see this is a demo, but in real world applications you will be subtracting a high definition shape from another high definition shape. At the early stages there is no reason to boolean, because you could simply model it the way you want without a lot of trouble.

  2. this is a great and crisp tutorial – thanks!
although I am learning Quad Mesh modeling within SketchUp, your operations are easy to understand and good transferable…

  3. Awesome tutorial. It really helped me understand what a boolean was and is capable of. Took me a minute to find a few of the tools because MAYA 2016 is a bit different and a few of the tools are under different tabs.
