when i try to use clone stamp it is saying that could not use the clone stamp because the area to clone has not been defined (alt click to define a source point)

the fucking tool literally has a mind of its own, it decides to work on some pictures and on others it doesnt. And of course, the picture I WANT it to work on, doesn't work, but every other picture, works perfectly fine, fuck photoshop man, so goddamn annoying.
How come when I work in the layer mask it does not let me do the clone stamp but I can do it in a background copy? Thanks for your help 🙂
