Event Photography Tutorial 101: How to Shoot Events

Event Photography Tutorial 101: How to Shoot Events

In this video, I go over the mind and gear set of how to photograph events of any kind. The biggest goal is to make these long days INTERESTING. If you can expose an image, you can photograph and get through an event making a company or brand look more human.

I go over the gear and settings I use for most events as well.

As always “Keep an Eye Out!”

  1. Thank you for wonderful video. You are like the only person who is talking about the gear. I have big conference soon and I want want my pics to be perfect. Which objective would you use? I have canon 1100D. Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I have a concern.
I was approached by a business owner friend who is hosting a gala event in January. He asked me if I can shoot at said gala.

I typically never really shoot at events due to never really having control of the environment. And there is no chance of a redo.

What information should I find out in order to base how much I should charge for the event?
All I know at the moment is that it will most likely be about 2-4 hours.

  3. I do event photography and the problem I have is getting decent photos of something being projected on a screen and the speaker at the same time without using HDR. I either get a very dark person or a washed out projection. Any tips on that?

  4. Enjoyed the video though would have loved more example images with the voice over. The only thing I would offer is telling new event photographers that it is going to take time to build a reputation and recommend volunteering A LOT in your 1st and even 2nd year to build a credible portfolio. A Google or Microsoft won't touch you without it.

  5. This was great! I was asked to donate a package to a local charity and take some event photos. I was really aiming cor family and engagement, but I am now booked for 4 events. You really broke it down and gave a great run though!

  6. hi, do you have any tips on shooting elder people?

  7. Hi!!!
I don't have a degree in photography or anything but i have been the photographer at my local church and everyone says I'm really good plus i really enjoy it.
I have been thinking of doing it as a business.
do i need to have degrees or anything or can i just do it??

  8. What strap is that? Rapid Strap? I need one! I tend to have my strap around the left side of my neck and around the top of my right shoulder. A 6D with a 24-70 gets heavy after 8 hours!

  9. Always love love love your videos!

I am a natural light photographer and I am getting requests for night Xmas Party shooting and this is my question. I have a crop camera (Nikon D7100), flash (SB800) and just got the Gary Fong lightsphere, also have 24-70 you talked about. I am searching for a full frame camera (D750) but photo store says I DON'T need to buy a FULL FRAME camera for inside/dark jobs if I have a flash. I DON'T agree with the statement… someone please give me a feedback on this? I think a full frame and ability to go high on my ISO would make my life easy on night club photography/inside ballroom where light is not that great! Thank you!

  10. Thanks for this Eric, great information. I'm literally walking out the door now to shoot an event, and the tips and inspiration will get me through the day. Always good to hear what you've been doing right, and ideas on how to make my shoot better. Thanks again.

  11. hey, hope u might read this, i'm very interested in photography and i already started a couple of months ago with the d3300 and the basic 18 to 55mm … i learnt a lot in the last period and it seems that i'm really liking and very interested in it … i'm not thinking of a specific field of photography, i'm just interested in them all and try different stuff from one time to another, so my question is, is there a possibility to start making money out of it? i know i'm not an expert, but everything u said in this video i kinda expected it cuz i did the calculations in my ahead how to setup my camera if i need to take some photos in a party/conference/events and so on … i think i might have a way of starting making money out of it, especially with the time going i'm literally thinking of upgrading directly to the D4 and the 24-70 mm, i just don't know if it will work out with making money out of it if possible (as i started this not seeking money at first, but as one says, if you r good at something, never do it for free), hope to get an advice from u, greetings from germany, thx!
