“The former dean of Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, who oversaw disgraced former doctor Larry Nassar’s clinic, faces charges that accuse him of groping a student and storing pornographic images on his computer, according to court records.
The charges are apparently the first related to a Michigan Attorney General’s investigation of sexual misconduct at Michigan State University that was announced in January.”

In most states, universities are required by law to report child abuse – there's your lawsuit right there. MSU will in be in court for a very long time.
Did MSU use the information from the PR firm to harm or discredit the victims or journalists? Did MSU assist in the investigation against the former dean? Is it possible MSU used the information to be sure they were acting responsibly as they dealt with the aftermath of this tragedy? Did the PR firm also monitor social media accounts of MSU staff? Is it possible they wanted to be sure nobody else at the University made things worse after the fact?
These are the relevant questions. These are the questions necessary to come to an informed conclusion about MSU. It seems you didn’t bother to find the answers before attacking MSU.
Every large institution is going to protect their image. You would as well. In this case protecting their image would include not making it worse. It seems you overlooked that possibility in a rush to condemn.
Find the answers to these questions and get back to us. Because, as it stands now, all you’re doing is generating outrage with half the information, which is lazy journalism, and that position is already taken. It’s Fox’s job.

While I agree that this was exceedingly stupid and morally reprehensible, to say "Michigan State University" did this is misleading. An individual or individuals with the power to hired this firm did this. We would be better served to learn who within the organization is to blame. We could then take steps to out these reprehensible individuals. Because, I can guarantee, those who are from the area or have some sort of affiliation with the university as a whole are going to feel attacked when you attempt to place the blame on the entire organization instead of those who are actually at fault. Learning about human nature and applying it will serve you well as a news organization.

I think you may be forgetting that this is a university that has educated very productive members of society, and that they are now having a hard time getting jobs because of a small amount of people’s bad decisions. It’s not a stretch to think the university’s reputation is important to more than just the scumbags. I miss when this was an actual independent reporting channel.
