this worked for one image and for another image with the same lighting the first round of freq separation is creating intense noise around my brush strokes even though im following the same directions.. my subject is a family portrait. Maybe the lighting highlights and shadows are too differentintense? help

You destroyed all of the detail 🙁 It's too blown out, unfortunately too many people learn to do it this way.
I like to take notes in order to remember what the steps were, but you seem to change your mind several times. First you reduce the saturation and then you change your mind. Was that a mistake on your part or was it because that method didn't work? Can we just skip that step in the future? The other problem I saw was when you decided to merge the layers to correct the problem. Same questions here too. BTW, it is at this point that my results differed from yours. I really would like to know your answers because I like your method. It appears to be simple and effective.
