easier way to center items is command + A
This was the first tutorial I watched after getting photoshop and it was so easy to follow and gave me a super great intro to what photoshop can do, so thank you so much.
Can you do a gradient relevant to the shape images or is it supposed to be gray ?
How were you able to make sure that the spacing between the shapes was even and the angle was straight? It looked like in the video that your shapes were snapping into place, but mine were not doing that.

you could have just used a mask.
Instead of merging shapes you can just group them together and clip the back ground image to the group. This allows you to main the ability to manipulate the shapes
