How to Create a Fun Bokeh Effect Using Photoshop

Half the fun of having a professional wide-aperture telephoto lens married to a DSLR or mirrorless camera is all you can do with bokeh. However, if you don’t have such a lens or want to have some fun with a past shot, this tutorial shows you how to easily add a bokeh effect using Photoshop.

Coming to you from Phlearn, the fun video shows you how to create a bokeh ball portrait using Photoshop. It’s an interesting look that can give your subject the appearance of being enveloped in a sea of light, and creating it in post isn’t terrible difficult. If you’re looking for bokeh ball images to use, it’s also not hard to create your own such images to keep on hand for future use. To do so, simply grab a wide-aperture lens, find a place with a lot of point sources of light (a row of streetlights or a string of holidays lights, for example), switch to live view and manual focus, then adjust the focus until you get the desired result. Throw the images in a folder on your computer, and you’ll have them ready to go whenever you desire.
