How to Create a Realistic Coin in Adobe Photoshop

With many countries still experiencing different degrees of restrictions, arranging photoshoots can be difficult. If you want to keep learning, Photoshop techniques are a decent substitute.

Many of us have had more time indoors of late and that can cause stagnation. There is a lot of photography that can be done at home, which can get you some of the way, but sharpening up your skills on Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom is valuable too.

One area of Photography I rarely touch but have been perpetually interested in is composites. I prefer to do everything I can in-camera, but the point of composites is to achieve a certain — often outlandish — effect that often could not be done without the use of heavy post-production.

In this video, Jesus Ramirez of the Photoshop Training Channel goes through how to create a realistic coin with a portrait etched onto it. This is an obscure project, but it creates a high-quality, effective result and many of the steps could be applicable to other concepts too. If you’re looking to create composites with gold or metal effects, this could be invaluable. It could also work well for logos or graphics.
