I recommend following this style of a channel art if you are uploading videos on a particular game. This way you can use HD images from the game as your background.

I also recommend using graphic packs (I linked on above). Graphic packs provide you with everything you would possibly need for any graphic design work, including banners, thumbnails, logos & more! Most graphics packs will provide you with color corrections, light flares, smokes, overlays, halftones, stocks, backgrounds and a lot more useful things.

You also have to take in mind that there will be a lot of layers once you’re done and organizing them in groups is very important. As you get more advanced, you will also have to learn how to create layer styles and use layer modes to create a better looking YouTube banner.

In case you don’t know how to use Photoshop, you can watch my beginners guide where I teach you how to align text, change blending options, align text, and use some other basic features and settings. http://youtu.be/oCZuy8fis28

Make sure to export/save the banner in a .JPEG or .PNG format and not a .PSD as you cannot open up a .PSD file in anything but Photoshop. A .PSD file is useful if you need to go back to your project and make any edits to the text, background, social media links etc..
