How to Use a Reflector to Light Portraits

When you are lighting portraits, you might sometimes notice unflattering shadows created on your subject’s face. It does not take much to fix that, however; often, just adding a reflector can fix those issues, and this great video tutorial will show you how to do that.

Coming to you from Daniel Norton with Adorama TV, this helpful video tutorial will show you how to use a reflector in tandem with strobes to shoot portraits. Photographers often choose to add a reflector to a portrait around the waist level of the subject, especially when they are shooting with something like a beauty dish overhead. While such a setup can offer great results, without something to kick a little light back upward, it can leave unflattering shadows in areas like under the eyes. A reflector on a short stand or held by the model can help to balance things out. There are even dedicated curved reflectors (such as the Westcott Eyelighter) that are made especially for this purpose. It is a great way to take your portraits up another level, and it is much cheaper than investing in another light and modifier. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Norton.
