  1. Thank you so much. This was just fantastic. I am a self taught computer operator. Photoshop was always a mystery to me. Just could not figure our layers and masks and the other different functions. This tutorial cleared a lot of the dust from my mind and I was able to understand a little more than I did before. I'll take your advice and watch this a couple of times more for the info to sink in. Looking forward to your next tutorial.

  2. Absolutely great. The 'Top' and 'Bottom' layers explanation seems to do it for me – something I'd always thought intuitively was the case but other tutorials seem to muddle it up and make me more confused. Now that I understand better, I can be more adventurous and progress to do something else. Thank you.

  3. Excellent video, in spite of using that confusing saying " white revels, black conceals" . As a beginner I can tell you that this kind of thing is what makes layer masks so difficult to understand. Black REVELS the bottom layer. Why would you ever use something black to clean a dirty window so that you can see through it??? There really must be a better way to explain this to people.

  4. Colin, you have made the understanding of masks so much easier! My other half and I have a photography business (very small) and love compositing – I am sure that this tutorial is going to help us make our images even better. Thank you!

  5. Colin, thanks so much for putting your work out there. I'm just getting back into web design after MANY years. Your work was very influential for me in the beginning, and now that I've reignited my passion for creating 'stuff' I have direct access to your knowledge to help me further hone my skills. Much appreciated.

  6. I really appreciate your very detailed and helpful tutorial explaining the basics of masks. That is one of the hardest things to learn. I learned something new…the gray 50% mask. This will be very helpful for future editing. Thank you!

  7. Truly enjoyed this tutorial, Colin. I learned so much from it and I will certainly begin to practice with it a lot more. Just one thing I have been noticing in your tutorials you always refer to your audience and "GUYS" but so many of us are not guys and do not like being referred to as such. Perhaps you could change that reference to something like "FOLKS" or ' FOLLOWS" making your wonderful teaching presentation more inclusive. Please consider my suggestion… with thanks, Cathy

  8. It's a very good video for a beginner like me but I tend to lose you as you really get into the details. I am 79 years old and probably have to watch the video a few times to really get the hang of it. Also, practice makes perfect. We have to give more time to practicing.
