How to Use Rim Lighting for Portraits

Using rim lighting can be a great way to create a portrait with a very different look than the more standard shot. If you have not tried it before, this great video will show you how you can use rim lighting (even in a small space) for portraits and walk you through some problem-solving associated with the technique.

Coming to you from Gavin Hoey with Adorama TV, this excellent video discusses how to use rim lighting for portraits. The cool thing about rim lighting is that even if you are new to lighting, it can be a fairly basic setup that provides you with interesting results that can help you start expanding your creativity and exploring other techniques. Furthermore, it takes a minimal amount of gear and can even be done with a single bare bulb, though as you’ll see, you can get a bit more out of it by adding a second light and a few modifiers. Hoey also adds some additional challenges that can help you push the technique a bit further. Whether you are a portrait or wedding photographer, adding rim lighting to your bag of tricks gives you a great extra look to offer to your clients. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Hoey.
