Jewelry Design Tutorial: Creating a model for 3D printer with Blender and netfabb

Tutorial is partially outdated. A lot of new tools came out since this tutorial was recorded. Here is outdated parts:
– Scale “undercut” object. → Now there is offset tool (Shrink/Fatten with Even Thickness option enabled).
– Creating additional “measurement” objects to check thickness or length. → Now there is Ruler/Protractor tool.
– Using netfabb for model checks. → Now Blender has 3D Print Toolbox add-on and Mesh Analysis tools.
– For boolean operations it is better to use Booltron add-on: https://youtu.be/KxbJSUQpw7I Instead of Sculpt Tools UI add-on.

In this tutorial we will build jewelry ring ready for 3D printing from scratch, using non destructive modeling workflow which allow us to change product and quick easy.

  1. здорово, конечно, но что я не могу принять, так это то что все делается "на глаз", это же, в свое время, отвернуло меня от макса. одна выборка масштабированием чего стоит… 🙁

  2. hey man can I have a little help here please? I just don´t know what happend, I can´t add the curve to the organic path, I make it several times the same steps but not happened, HELP PLEASE¡¡ can I send you my file? can you give me please your e mail adress or something, thanks a lot

  4. When I use the Boolean Difference tool for my Shank object, the result leaves my model with lots of triangles on edges where the Shank has been subtracted. I've tried cleaning this up changing them to quads, but after a while I've ruined the model. Will the triangles affect further modelling on my model and the 3D printing? Thanks for uploading this tutorial. I'm new to Blender and found this very helpful.

  5. Thanks Mikhail, I intend to import your recommended add on for optimum results. I accidentally moved the ring object a little and to my surprise I got the undercut I needed as in your video. Really thankful that you are sharing this awesome modelling experience of yours thorough this fascinating software of Blender. Already a fan! If it's possible to include your verbal instructions in subsequent videos, I think it would ease the learning experience further:)!

  6. Dear Mikhail, Thank You for this magical video! I got to 1/3 of your video but ran into a problem with the boolean function. Instead of an undercut, the boolean operation returned the Shank bool in object with the bezier circle of the ring. Did I miss something? Thank You.

  7. This is my second Blender tutorial and just started today but dang this was hard. I got about 1/3 and then made a different ring. Thanks for the tutorial! Would be a lot better with voice recorded.

  8. What about flat earrings, for example? Would you use boolean or sculpting? Im trying to make these flat earrings with holes for the gemstones, I tried with boolean but I got sooooo many problems with that… then I tried sculpting, but it's not really working aswell.

  9. Awesome tutorial, thank you Mikhail!  For those looking to find a printer, I found ShapeWays to be a great solution if you don't want to make the huge investment.  They print in silver, platinum, white/rose/normal gold and polish it up for you.  Just make sure you have a jeweler handy to set your gem!

  10. Thanks Mikhail for the great tutorial. I just have one issue when using this as a template for designing a ring. I am trying to cut out a cylinder in the ring to place some glass. However, when i create the cylinder to cut the hole i add modifier (boolean) then select difference, The shank does not seem to allow me to cut out a hole. Is there some sort of  function i am missing to make the shank behave in a manner that allows me to cut the cylinder shape from the ring with the boolean modifier? Thanks again for the great tutorial.

  11. Do you have a text transcript of this tutorial??  I'm just learning blender and I find it hard to follow the tute with the text pop-ups.  It seems to be a very good one.  I'm excited to create my first object in blender with your help!

  12. thank you Mikhail great job
At 44:12 in video, you talked about an addon for calculating the weight of the materials.
I am very interested in this add, please where i can  find it?
Could you share with the community?
    thanks
