Spreading gemstones on surface is the most frequent task in jewelry design. In this tutorial you will know what is the pave setting and how to spread diamonds on surface according to this specific type of setting. And as usual I will show you how to create ready for 3D printing jewelry ring with number of diamonds from scratch.

  1. I want to learn Blender which is why I thought–mistakenly this video would help–wrong–You spent most of the time -NOT explaining what you were doing, but then you never said you were going to show how it's done-just show it being done, my mistake..

  2. I literally followed every step, step by step, and i think because the blender updated its version that some of the functions have changed slightly and that may be the reason i had a bit of difficulty following…

  3. Thanks,
I've got these models from a different sources during my work as jewelry designer in company, later I remodeled every single one to have a better topology, be more optimized and meet standards of "GIA" and "MSU Gemmological Center".
And shape of the gemstone is not important in jewelry modeling (only for rendering), like round diamond in JewelCAD is not an exact copy of round diamond, just looks like it from a very big distance.
So do not bother yourself with this.

  4. Thank you for sharing your agility of using Blender to build jewelry models. I noticed you seemed to recall previously saved files containing different gem shapes. Did you personally model them as well? Your presentation was inspiring and fun to watch! I'd like to see how you would model the round brilliant shape even if the ones you used were made by someone else. Any way I am a fan of your style, Thanks again!

  5. SubD will never replace NURBS, unfortunately it's not possible on todays SubD technology development stage (especially with shity blender SubD's).
But booleans could, if Cambo or Serg would move in this direction + Open SubD (I pray for you Brecht!), it might partially replace the NURBS.
And I hope it is how it gonna be.

  6. Yeah, export suxx yet ๐Ÿ™ Campbell knows about it but he told that this thing will be implemented (I mean n-gons in .obj) after everything will be "nailed" in the new BMesh system. It's sounds good logically.
BTW NURBS can be "exchanged" by Subsurfed meshes in Blender. This goes well when a modeller knows how to work with poly flows properly. And some cases are very easier to model with subsurf techniques than using NURBS.

  7. jThanks for the Tutorial! I learned a lot! One thing that will help your tutorials, Give more explanation, either verbally or via text. Fill the long voids of silence with tips, tricks, your methods and your tools. The key stroke is not always enough to tell what exactly you are doing.

  8. Rhino is so popular because it's easy, and I love rhino for it's easiness and use it sometimes. Not ideal for jewelry but has some neat NURBS tools and great for almost any pipeline cuz import/export abilities.
I my case (the same case applies to the studio I've been working in) the real problem of blender as jewelry design too is a lack of import/export and poor particle system.
I hope guys from BF will work something out.

  9. P.S. I'm pretty sure that so "loved" (by jewl.designers) Rhyno suxx for jewelry designing pipeline. It's way too limited although it's pretty easy in usage for ppl who learned AutoCad and similar programs. Wish we'll have some better Bevel Modifier in Blender (or at least a precise and good working command of it).

  10. I'm not a jewelry (or kind of) designer although this tutorial was pretty interesting!
And big thanks you reminded me about that Sculpt Tools addon – it's very useful when you have some cumbersome "boolean" modelling. Further process of cleaning is going best with "limited dissolve" command (hit Space then type). It's a real saver ๐Ÿ™‚
