Pre-ordering opens for DragonBox Pyra

The DragonBox Pyra is a Linux-based gaming console / mini computer. Its focus is on desktop Linux apps and emulating game consoles including the PlayStation 1, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo 64, and Gameboy DS. At liliputing.com, learn more about pre-orders for the console.

It’s not clear yet how large the customer base will be, so prices are not set either. Your pre-order will basically be a voucher, covering part of the final cost. The DragonBox Pyra is fully open source, and it’s specs are available on their site. Although referred to as a gaming console in liliputing.com’s news, it can in fact be used for everyday computing.

Valve removes SteamOS icons

As Linux Game News reports, Valve has been removing SteamOS icons from Linux titles on Steam that only run against the Steam Runtime get this SteamOS icon, to show support by Steam. Gaming on Linux also reports on this news, and refers to reddit, where a Valve rep actually gave some explanation on the removal of the icons.

Ubuntu 15.10 patches for Steam Controller

With the release of the Steam Machines getting closer, Ubuntu 15.10 has been patched for the Steam Controller. Ubuntu had access to the hardware, making sure it will work as soon as it hits the market. Older versions of Ubuntu will follow later this week, as the patches will be back-ported. As Gaming on Linux writes, you needed to tweak Ubuntu previously, if you wanted the controller to work.

Pick of the week: Steam Link gets gutted

Softpedia reported on two reddit users who took apart the Steam Link. “Its basic function is to simply replace a long HDMI cable between the TV and the computer. Just connect it to the TV and the local network and you’ll be able to play your PC games on the TV.”

As Valve is still not saying much about Steam Link, you can get a pretty good idea about what’s inside, and the technology used, by looking over mcd1992’s thread.

New games out for Linux

Pulse, first person adventure

Pulse has been released on Steam for Linux. As a work of love, by Pixel Pi games, players can finally experience this games after years of work. Steam recommends Ubuntu 12.04 or SteamOs to run the game.

Hyperdrive Massacre arcade action

34BigThing has released Hyperdrive Massacre for Steam, Linux. The game has 6 game modes, letting you fly around in one of 16 cars, annihilating your opposition. This includes 8 sci-fi themed battle arenas.

Hyperdrive Massacre is an 80s inspired local multiplayer fragfest for up to 4 players. Players take control of a space cadillac and frag their way to victory against friends or can also play against AI. Both modes allow players to unlock a full crew roster. Submachine guns, sniper rifles, frag grenades, homing missiles and bullet deflectors are just some of the tools player can use to create havoc.
