If you want to make games you have to know how to make Asteroids! It requires you to understand moving in a 3D space, collision detection, inertia, velocity, rotating shapes using math instead of rotating the canvas, reacting immediately to user input, animating polygons, creating and destroying objects, trigonometry, and numerous other related topics!

If you learn how to make Asteroids, Pac-Man, Mario and Zelda you can make any 2D game. If this tutorial gets views I will make all of the above using pure JavaScript.

Unlike most everyone I take the time to edit my videos. That means I cover the same amount in 1/3rd of the time. I provide all the heavily commented code below. For best results print it out and pause your way through the video while taking notes.

  2. Hey Derek, I was wondering what it would take for the canvas to move with the player (keeping the player at the center of the screen). I know there's a canvas.translate() function but I'm unsure as to where it should be or how it should be implemented. Thanks

  3. This one is really good stuff I can visualize. been experimenting just painting shapes on screens for the past hour. i think creating an x,y,z space would be relatively straight forward, but I cant quite get my head around creating the camera man type perspective in that space.

  4. Hi. Thanks for the fun video tutorial. In the way back machine, I used code printed in magazines to learn BASIC and Assembly on Commodore's PET and Apple][e. By using programs like the ones you create, post and explain I got well ahead of the times, and worked for four decades, coding and repairing hardware. Thank you for your work.

    About this video – I see that a few users (as I) are stuck with non-working code at the halfway point. I typed all the code in (not copy/paste, I learn through my fingers), verified it line for line with the videos, then checked my typing against your finished code and found a bunch of "quotes" changed to 'tics' and functions and statements added, missing or moved. Was this intentional (to let us de-bug)? Do you have "edited" code for the first half? If you would, look under "Mr Fakeman" for a thread of folks who are still scratching our heads. Thanks!

  5. If you have a Nintendo Switch you should totally check out FUZE!!

    It could really use some awesome tutorials like this as the community is still growing. Not sure if a flavor of BASIC would interest you…but it's a pretty powerful little IDE that runs on the Switch and gives access to almost all of the Switch's sensors and inputs. Supports 2D and 3D.
