I received a tutorial request from a subscriber wanting to model a boat. His question was how to texture wood, for example to texture a boat deck. This tutorial contains some tips on texturing ( and modeling ) and also contains some links to other video’s I have made on boat related topics such as “How to model twisted rope”

  1. Anyone here know how to handle baking a low poly wooden plank with a high poly version? I have soft edges set on the low poly plank while baking. It works great except for the sides of the plank, its has a normal that makes it look rounded. the ends of the plank, not the flat side but thin side. the normals are half and half, one is soft and 1 is harsh, making a weird normal line through it. I can't use hard edges because the bakes turn out weird and you can see the seams. I can't make the UVs any better, its a plank so its not a UV problem. Its definately an easy fix and I'm overlooking something simple. If I set the flat face to soft edge and the edges to hard, it'll make really harsh visible seams. IDunno im confuzzled.

  2. Hi Mike, I was looking for a tutorial on how to make splintered edges like if a beam broke, I have also seen something where some other displace or bump mapping was added to a square beam and it rendered out like a buckled log. Do you have any tutorials on this?

  3. What was the default settings before you instructed the settings to be changed please? My renders where ok now after making the changes you advised they seem to be all stuffed up

  4. I was watching tutorials for both earlier and i feel like blender is alot more organised and accessable when it comes to texturing with the easy to draw connections but i cant model in blender for the life of me, is it just because im not used to maya?

  5. thanks man, but I got a problem here I already made a ship the problem is when I apply the file texture the texture is scaled and fit to the geometry I have which make a stretching type of a texture is there a way that the texture is duplicated on faces or something like that ?
