In this Autodesk Maya tutorial I will show you how to create a basic vehicle rig using a Whilly’s Jeep that we modeled in a previous modeling tutorial video.
The process involves parenting, Point constraints, Orient constraints and much, much more.
.
If you want to see how to model this Jeep please check out the tutorials here :

Hey this is a really great tutorial, I have a question though, when I set up point control it pushes the wheel up and it rotates very weird, does it maybe have something to do with the pivot I'm pretty sure I centered them please help me if you can , Thanks
is there a way to limit the rotation of a lever? I mean it keeps turning 360 degrees all the time when I move the master control in the Z axis. I want it to move from it's normal state to about 90 degrees and stop there.
You're my hero
mike how do i create controls curves
hey mike, can u pls show to to attach it to a motion path and make wheels change direction automatically?
or is that one has to do it manually ?if so then how to set key frames when using motion path or something like that.I am a beginner and having some issues with it,tried using Ik spline curve and attaching it to motion paht but it didnt work. TY 🙂
If I rotate the vehicle 90 degrees and push it back and forth will the wheels rotate? And if I rotate the vehicle 180 degress will the rotation of the wheels be inverse?
ground control to major Tom hahahaha jesus good one. great tutorial btw
Hello! I was wery enthusiast at the begining of the video….but very dissapointed to see you don-t give any explanation about creating the nurbs curves…anyway, thanks for the video.
I had the radio on in the background whilst watching this. As soon as you said ground control to major tom, Space Oddity started playing on the radio. Love David Bowie!!
ah thank god, been trying to find your channel for ages, Mike is this method good for games or should i use bones?
Great video! Thanks for uploading
can you make or link me to a tutorial rigging with bones rather than constraints? this will not work for UE4 🙁
I tried to add the Orient Constraint and it gives this error "Target list was empty or contained no valid targets"
Hey mike having problems with the expression, the value says its rotating but the actual wheel is not (I have wireframe on so I can tell if it is rotating)
Thank you so much sir, I will watch how to model the jeep after this video. Thank you so much again 🙂
I know it's an old vid but this is very useful thx
Hey Mike,
Sorry I am again Bothering you!!!
i wanted to do rig car but i wanted auto suspension in that. i will be very appreciate if you reply!!!
it will be okay if tutorial is not in video. any document or written tutorial will also work..
Please PLEASE Reply!!
Mike Did you create any video for the Vehicle Ring ring set. I mean how did you set the the circle and when you move the car how it's wheel auto rotated. Can you publish the Rigging video from beginning Or any Link fro more detail. Look I see you most of the video, Can i help me to understand this matter.
SIr You already had those Nurbs and then you continued you didnot even tell how to create those nurbs please tell me how you created those nurbs(curves used for rigging). Please replay And pls tell how to connect those nurbs to our jeep
Here's a super mega dumb question. Whats the difference between Point and Orient constraints. When to use which one?
my tires arn't rotate when i move root_ctrl… they change the value of rotateX in channel box but they arn't rotate
Hello. Great tutorial, but I have a question. My wheels are following the car, but when it comes to rotating, they just follow the car and start to stay behind the car and they dont rotate. Any solution would be helpful.
Hey mike hermes, your rig is nice and working properly. But I wanted that whenever we rotate main car control steering of front wheel or back wheel should rotated on based with car main control. Means auto steering.. Please please tell me how to do that..
My English is very poor so sorry if there is an mistakes..
But please please tell me how to do that
Great tutorial! I was able to get as far as rotating the wheels. BUT when I try to parent the global control with the root control, it is not working. Basically the wheels won't rotate when I use the global control to move forward. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Something with the parent controls? Thanks
Thank You…
Nice video…
Thank you! Helped me a lot! For those who have problem with slow and irrelevant rotating wheels, just add *31.4 on the end of expression. (Name1.rotateX = Name2.translateZ *31.4) Keep up the awesome work! I subbed.
hey great video, however when i want to have the wheels turned while moving they just start rotating on a weird axis because obviously the rotateX direction is still facing forward, is this something ive done wrong or just a limitation with the rig?
Thanks
I'm 24 and I'll have you know, I'm fully aware of Major Tom and his problems with maintaining effective communication with ground control. (also, great tutorial. Tres handy)
