Metering modes are one of the functions of the camera that people get most confused about when starting with photography. Many disregard them, and call the feature unimportant. While having little knowledge of metering modes can still leave you with amazing images, understanding what each of them do can make situations with tricky lighting a lot easier to shoot.

I find it a lot easier to learn from your videos, you simplify and break it down in a way this old dog can learn a few new tricks-not so easy for my generation to learn new technologies, lol so that speaks to your talent for teaching!

Thank you so much for this brilliant explanation. I finally understand metering which I was struggling understanding it. It would be perfect if you had some examples, like picture using different metering to see the difference. Thanks again and keep on posting great video. PEACE!

You are really great at explaining. The only thing I can say I would love to see in your videos are examples of what you are explaining. Ex: a picture with each of the metering modes. You're the best, literally. I've seen a lot of Pros try to explain this but it seems they forgot what it is to be a true beginner. Thank you.

Great and clear tutorials, I've also watched your videos about lenses – they're straight to the point. You should consider doing some journalism IMO (if you're not into it yet)

For some reason my camera (canon t3) doesn't allow me to set my exposure. When I try, my exposure set's itself up to automaticaly take three pictures with three different exposures. What do you suggest?

Once again, great video! QUESTION?……. I'm doing a portrait shot and taking my meter reading from a greycard. Should I be using center weighted metering?

Hey man. I have been watching you now for a while, but have never responded to any of your videos.

You are a damn fine talented photographer, especially for your age (Hate bringing that into the equation, but seriously!)

Your videos are by far the most precise, and easy to follow on youtube. Even more so than the paid tutorials on the web by pro's.

By the way, Glory Glory Man United!!

    Greetings from South Africa.

Could you please explain the metering process in details? Like how and where to point the camera to get a proper meter reading? For instance, if you are doing a portrait or shooting people, they say you should focus on the eye that's closest to your camera. But if you put the focus point over the eye, say dark eyes, won't that throw the meter off? And how would you meter for landscape shots, if you have a lot of contrast? Thanks for all the great informative videos. 🙂

Nice video. You can set the camera on total auto mode, but the metering setting can greatly affect the results.

And which is the one that you prefer using more often? We were told in school to use center weighted metering…Could you do a video showing on what situations you would use each metering mode? Please…

    Thanks,
    Zoe
