NEW HAIR SHADER! – Blender 2.8 Alpha

This shader is an implementation of the paper by Chiang et al., which was used in the Disney film, “Zootopia”®.

Landed in both master and Blender 2.8. Will it come to EEVEE? Eventually parts of it can be made compatible but it won’t look the same as this is quite raytracing heavy.

Artwork by Chris Chuipka, thanks!

  1. I did a render speed test with my old hair shader which includes diffuse, glossy and translucency shaders with lots of gradient ramps, and without any hair shader, and compared it to the principle hair shader. and my old shader was still rendering eventually much faster. I've tested it on CPU because my GPU seems to be too old for this cuda version. Are the principle shaders actually better suited for GPUs?

  2. here's a suggestion for pie-menus (don't know if this is a good place to post this): when you drag the mouse swiftly from the center towards a menu item, make it select that item. like in Houdini.

  3. I think 2.8 is going to be the best thing to happen to blender. I can't wait until it's fully released, but I wonder what they could possibly do after 2.8. Will it be the final blender program?
