This summer I had the honor of getting a private photography lesson with John Free. John is one of the great living street photographers of our generation. Steeped in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and W. Eugene Smith, Free takes the precedent set by these fine photographers and applies it to the modern world.

  7. What does he mean by "easy shots?" Clearly, we see him standing on the beach and taking pictures of a guy in a wheel chair. Looks easy. But what is the difficult part? Once that is known then it can be pursued. It involves the meeting of the scene with something essential about yourself. I spent decades on Santa Monica beach and ran miles on it going underneath the cool, dark pier hinting of danger in its shadows. You have to look in those shadows to know yourself. You have to know what you're looking for in a scene. You're looking for yourself, really. You're looking at and into and through the shadows. Thus every picture turns out to be a self-portrait. It has to be. Anything else is an "easy shot."

  9. Wow, what an exceptional man… I could listen to him talk about photography for days, so inspirational… make it difficult, easy ain't worth nothin'… words to live by I guess. Time to stop being a schmuck and be fearless more. Great video Ted, really enjoyed it

  11. This was fabulous, I'm so glad I saw this, I'm a newbie to photography and it has changed everything about how I thought I should take pictures. The key here is to slow it down, this is what I'm taking onboard. No more taking loads of shots with the hope I may get one good one. Its inspired me to acquire an old camera and shoot with film too. Thankyou!
