Is This The Best Background Blur / Bokeh / Shallow Depth-of-Field Filter Ever? In this video, we will stress test the brand new Photoshop 2022’s updated version of the “Depth Blur” feature, which is a part of Neural Filters. This time around, there are major changes like processing on-device instead of the cloud, and way more refined results among many other additions.

But still, the question remains, can we finally use it now? That’s what we will find out in this episode. Also, we will put this feature head-to-head with Luminar’s Portrait Bokeh AI and see how it holds up. I hope you enjoy this video. Thank you so much for watching πŸ™‚

  1. Hi Unmesh – amazing review, and thanks for objectivity and keeping us on our toes. Feedback is taken to the team, we'll continue refining the ML quality, the user experience and use the power of Photoshop and masking capabilities!

  2. β–Ί For those of you who have concerns over the absence of manual focus masking at 10:59: Many of you are suggesting using the masking tools inside neural filters. Please note that it is nothing but a simple mask that you can anyway add in Photoshop, and it only controls in which areas the "overall" effect shows up or hides (whether blurred or in focus). That's a good idea if you want to bring back certain things, and it might work in some cases. However, it may result in unnecessary halos. Also, here's the actual problem; how will you defocus the things that are mistakenly kept in focus? The only way to do that is adding blur later, manually, defeating this feature's purpose. It isn't like Luminar's Portrait Bokeh AI, where you can absolutely control which areas to blur and which ones to keep in focus.

  3. Thanks for the review. You can manipulate the mask in Depth Blur – look at the toolbar on the left hand-side (circle with + and circle with -). As soon as you click on one of them you can use the "Select subject", "Invert", etc then add or subtract from the mask using the circle with + or circle with – .

  4. It just unbelievable , Ai technology already goes so far. I am thinking about the future! .
Btw i think Photoshop is good . Reason is Photoshop can focus on not human objects and sense of detecting object and distance and blur them it's more natural. You can manually fix the problems of some area that erased. On the other hand Luminar ai has a option just select and deselect subjects, its a good option.

  5. think a photographer or an editor needs to be a project manager at Adobe for these projects, to get an on ground perspective for these s/w. They just dont seem to know what is required at the end user.

  6. OMG!!! A scene in ADOBE R&D department . TM is telling the R & D team "Guys keep this picture next your system, please be aware that this guy is going to test the upgrade, not me. So sit tight and do a good job and see that this guy comes back with good review". No prizes for guessing the picture of that guy.πŸ˜πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ€£

  7. i think its really hard to determine the perfect depth of an image. the only accurate fake bokeh we can create is when an image has a depth information embedded in its alpha channel. do you know any camera that can do this? I know the high-end mobile phone now does this (via 3d images/parallax pictures) but in low resolution and therefore inaccurate. I'm not sure with the laser equipped focus.
