Reference image 3d modeling technique is to help modelers speed up their modeling process by ‘drawing’ over their reference images or designs accurately. With just 5 to 10 minutes to insert a reference image before starting to model a 3D object, you speeds up your production by 5 times or more!

Image plane method is available with Maya. However, I created this video for artists who are using other 3D softwares to be able to learn this method too.

  2. It is very helpful, but I would of liked it if you carried on and showed us how you made it the shape of the side view. Then you say you have to extrude the shape but I have no idea how to do that yet either lol. Otherwise it's a great vid.

  4. Hi thank you for questions. Yes Maya reference image is available and it's an option too. However, I use this method mainly because I can view and visualize my model when I am in perspective view. This could be my personal preference and a more straight forward WYSIWYG referencing. I know for sure my scaling for modeling is 1:1 ratio, which makes it easier for me to compare my model with my reference. Hope that answer your queries! 🙂
