A week has past since the first Blender 2.8 Alpha release. There’s life (and features!) after Alpha.

  1. I still dont understand why the VIewlayer dropdown is at the top but it also has its own panel?! Im updating AMaranth for 2.80 and i think i will add that there, makes more sense. I also will add back the preset function. Also because the viewlayers is a dropdown we dont have that nice 1 click solution we had with renderlayers. Now w need to click the menu than click which viewlayer we want to see. Again thats one of the many things we needs exttra clicks, like so many items do now need. They simplified by stuffing everything in menus and dropping 70% of the shortcuts. Thats INSANE!

  2. The transparent background should be for each view layer. Otherwise, how can I render and composite image in one set, If I want some transparent layer in front of a layer with hdri/sphere background and moving camera?
Seems that I should make my sky as an object then.

  3. Hold my beer, but there is something important missing I think… How you get one collection to affect the other if they are in different layers? I am trying and I cannot make it work. I leave this video as an exemple, you can see the shadow on the plane. With your solutions this does not happen, or there is a step missing (I guess with reflections happens the same) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nattlrdnEPM

  4. I notice that you can't automatically render an animation with two different scenes composited together. You have to manually switch between scenes and render both before the two can be composited. I want to do this because I want to render smoke in an animation with far less samples than the objects so I put the smoke into a different scene. You can see here when you hit render animation, if two different scenes are in one compositor node tree, it will automatically render bother: https://youtu.be/9L8qOq1Shiw?t=1h11m6s

  5. YES, we can do that to replicate the renders layers from 2.7, BUT if you watch closely, the problem is not just to exclude the collections from view layers but also to keep the reflections of the excluded ones on the one that is visible. THAT is the problem which Robert Andries wanted to point out and that is the feature that is missing in 2.8.

Please check another video about this:

The plane retains the shadow and the reflections from the cube, and the cube has the plane’s reflection. Basically we need camera ray visibility and holdout toggles for collections besides the exclude and include options. And then it will be just perfect.

All the work done for blender 2.8 is highly appreciated but PLEASE DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS. For digital compositors this feature is of absolute importance. I learned blender because of cycles renderer and this feature with render layers.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

(for some reason my comment from 1 week ago does not show up. If it appears twice, I apologize)

  6. I love 2.8, but its disappointing that NVIDIA development tools have dropped support for GTX 4xx and 5xx GPUs. Some us won't be able to enjoy Eevee & 2.8 with GPU compute power from cards like GTX 480/570. Why is NVIDIA forcing Blender users to buy the latest/expensive GPU cards?

  7. Pablo Vazquez, I like your idea for the "Hold My Beer" segment so much that I worked out a design tailor made for it…. 2 months ago. Seriously though, I had to laugh when you mentioned the name for your segment. If you have the time and would like to check out an unconventional use of Blender, it is currently the third most recent post on my channel titled as a 2D shirt design. Thanks for the videos, I really like them. Both languages.

  8. Being able to select all items in active collection either by default or with a simple command would be nice, Pablo read over the second half of that comment, unfortunately. I've always missed shift click bottom item in older versions. Sure we have quick favorites, but this is pretty much essential for the render layer exclusion shown in Hold My Beer episode 1, for instance. Most of the time, a collection will have a lot more than 3 minus 1 hand-selectable items.

"Whern grease pencil gets released, you will hear people screaming in the streets" I laughed out loud. Also, WORK SPACES, whoohoo!

  9. Ahh dammit, messed up the first question, I meant to say how will you be able to export from Blender to game engines since Blender Render is gone, not BGE. Cycles doesn't allow me to export stuff unfortuntely. Unless I can be corrected, maybe this could be for HMB episode 2?

I have OpenGL 4.4 so unfortuntely the outline isn't just me 🙁

  10. Been using blender for more than 12 years now. We need to educate people with the new version about changes. I seriously believe shortcuts and layout is a bigger issue than crashes in terms of usability. At least Shortcut changes from 2.79 to 2.80 should be visible when you open 2.80.. It is very unfriendly for long blender users.

  13. For HOLD MY BEER: I can create shadeless flat material with just ONE tick (shadeless checkbox) in blender 2.79 internal render materials, how to do this in 2.8? (with one tick) 🙂

  14. I love Blender today. Question? Pablo will the 2.8 VSE have time remapping support and Cuda Hardware acceleration support to speed up the mp4 video renders? Without needing scripts or add ons? Thanks. In the 2.79 VSE I get can not animate Play back. And as far as i know the 2.79 VSE does not utilize Cuda on Nvidia GPUs. Also as far as i know 2.79 does not utilize more than one CPU core. Even though all or some threads are designated in the render output settings.

  15. I like the favourites menu. Will there be a way to differentiate buttons that have the same name? Like maybe seeing a description of the function, or a menu path or something? I can imagine issues when adding functions that have the same name

  16. Thanks for all the good work, but I have a question, though, about the Compositing layers: Why not simply create a new button called Collection, in the Node Editor (after Object, World and Line Style), which would allow you to access to the nodes that would be associated to the Collection you've selected on the Collection menu, it would be much easier to manage the post processing effects by this simple way

  17. Really like the A/Alt+A change. The behaviour always felt weird to me: Sometimes you have to press A twice to select all (when you had something selected) sometimes only once (when nothing was selected).

  18. How do you mask collections on the render? Any way that we can lock individual keyframes? Is documentation and explanation going to be an afterthought? If so, this omission makes for long learning curves, a chronic shortcoming of Blender for production operations.
