Have you heard of ngSkinTools? It helps with weight painting. When using it, you don't have to worry as much about stray verts. It also speeds up the painting process.

i have not used Maya in ages, it is cool seeing how much has changed. plus it is cool to see what you can do with the program. i love the pick and the blending of colours for the butterfly!
