Alimayo Arango of arangodigitalproduction.com teaches how to model a simple mech in Blender 2.69. This model is designed to be fairly easily to rig and animate.
I was a huge fan of a series called Robotech when I was kid and had a lot fun making this tutorial.

Haha, Robotech. Now you're showing your age. Used to be one of my favorite cartoons growing up. That and Transformers of course.
I'm just starting this video. Once I go through this and the animation part I might be using a mech in a Rude Burger Video. Stay tuned.
Many thanks for this helpful tuto … I've made an awesome TimberWolf and learned a lot
First, I know this is a video from 2014, so a lot of my questions or statements may be out of sheer ignorance, so please forgive me. Depending on feedback(or lack thereof lol) I'll just start a new comment OR reply here.
8:45 those items are at a 45 degree rotation from each original and 180 preferred from each other wouldn't holding ctrl make that in line easier? Or was this more an artistic choice? (asking from ABSOLUTE ignorance on my part)
Thanks for this tutorial! Pretty cool tricks you show us here. Helps a lot! Thx
thank you for this tutorial Alimayo, I'am new to blender and well explained, step by step tutorial is really what I need, to understand what i'am doing. so thanks again
Woah you have loads of vids on mech models! Great stuff, you're great at what you do!
For some reason i can't flatten starting cube, I've gone over what you're doing to flatten it several times, i can't figure it out.
Thanks Alimayo, lerarend a lot!!
Thank you very much Alimayo for this amazig tutorial. It really helps learning basics and you create something great even as a beginner.

This was a great tutorial, thank you for using your time to make it! Does anyone know why, after duplicating and then rotating on cursor pivot, the meshes are darker?

thx so much sir, u helped me a lot
Thank you friend. I really appreciate the tutorial =D I modified it a bit and cut the back off of the cage so I could put it in the hull easier.
Thanks very much for the tutorial, very helpful!
I like this tutorial but when I did the part where to duplicate the leg and tried doing the scale -1 it flopped the leg upside down but it did go to the spot where it was supposed to but it was just upside down, not sure why this happened as I am following the tutorial exactly. Will comment more as I come across anymore problems.
Just built this one to, it looks amazing and your tutorials are amazing to. Now I'm going to animate it using the tutorial you made for it and again thanks for making these amazing awesome things in blender. By the way I'm 12 and I'm able to follow what you saying in your tutorial easily so you know your doing a good job explaining. 🙂
OMG I love you thanks for making these videos they've helped me a lot in blender
god explanation tut
I like this guy Alimayo A. he makes things simple by saying 'today I'll show you' but my big question is this: how do you earn by showing me….? thanks a lot for teaching me bender. now two weeks.
I finished modelling badass mech following this tutorial. I also finished modelling modelling a awesome gunship using similar techniques.
I found this cause I wanted to learn how to model Robotech mech. Cool that you are a fan as well^^ great tutorial man:)
A bit fast, but very good tutorial! The CTRL + Right mouse button thing at 49:40 just doesn't work for me. I am in edit mode, all windows look the same as your windows … I just don't know what I'm doing wrong at that part.
I don't have Blender, but your tutorial is awesome Alimayo. Nice pace, great information all the way through, and video's like this would easily help turn me towards getting Blender and having a play around. Never done anything like this before – you make it so simple. I was like "OMG" all the way through. I've watched lots of other tutorials from other authors, and so I was trying to guess what you would do next, or remembering when you explained certain key-presses what they are for – and I like that style. Despite never installing Blender, I'm already learning so much about the interface and options/key commands by watching work as detail and informative as yours.
Subscribed, and I'm going to look for other follow up vids on the Mech…
Thanks again

I logged in, just to leave this comment. I like how you don't make assumptions about what people may or may not know, and explain why you take the steps you do, as well as throwing in some generally helpful tips as you go along. Not to mention, you spent an hour doing something you've probably done a thousand times, at a super slow pace, just to help people learn. On top of that, you do this for free! I'm gonna jump on the hype wagon, and say this is a great tutorial from a great teacher!
WOW
Thank You so much 😀
Great tutorial
Wow, flashback form the Madcat reference. Sunder and Madcat were my faves.
GREAT tutorial. Thanks for showing the whole process at a reasonable rate. What is up with all the timelapse/speed modeling tutorials? Does anyone find speed modelling videos useful? To me it's just guys wanking at how good of a model they are — kinda like going to a delicious buffet to watch other people eat brunch.
Nice to see someone else who "select with right" really irritates haha. Can't wait to get some time to sit down and watch your videos. This looks like exactly what I've been looking for…nice and simple. Hopefully you can make UV mapping and texturing seem a lot less mystical as well, as you can see by my pic…I don't have a lot of hair left to lose over it.
Hello I used your Mech Helm for an littel Tank can i use it for youtube
Great video!! Thank you very much 🙂
Robotech rules! (and thanks for the tut)
Hey Alimayo, thanks for the tutorial! This was the first model I made and now I'm working on an indy game project on the weekends =)
Working through your tutorial, my first time using Blender, and I knew I was in for a treat when you explained how to modify the legs after the fact. Thanks for putting this up, I've learned a months worth of drawing in just a weekend thanks to this!
Appreciate the thorough tutorial. I learned like 10 new shortcuts. Keep it up!
Very good and well explained tutorials.
Maybe the best beginner turorials I've found so far. =D
Hey Alimayo, I am just getting started with Blender and wanted to model my own mech which led me to your video, thank you for taking the time to put together such a high quality and informative video you have taught me a huge amount on day one.
