Sleeping in my Car for Landscape Photography

Landscape photography requires a certain amount of commitment whether it is a long hike or an early start. In this video I aim to photograph sunset and sunrise in the lake district national park, however I have nowhere to stay for the night. Wild camping is out of the question, campsites were full and hotels are too expensive. My last option was to sleep in my car and it paid off as I woke up to beautiful mist and fog which made for some great landscape photography.

  1. Hey Tom! Loved the last image. I know this comment is a couple months overdue, but… I feel youโ€™re a bit hung up on the โ€œhigh contrast = b&wโ€ (which normally serves you just fine) but in this case I wouldnโ€™t mind checking the high contrasted one on colour. You are the one who taught us to break the rules in photography!
    Cheers from Argentina

  2. I'm too much of a whuss to vlog in front of myself, let alone another human… So I'd much rather be spotted mid-urination. ๐Ÿ™‚

As always, love your video. Your self awareness is something I relate to heavily.

Used to love road trips sleeping in my car for weeks at a time and really miss those times. This video was a pleasant reminder of those days.

  3. Did you know that most Volvo's you can tilt the front seats forwards. There is little leavers at the rear of the seat runners, if the lift them up the seats tilt all the way forwards and will give you more room.

  4. The spider web shot is superb. Though I guess it is shot rather at 1/50 instead of 150 seconds (or did you forget to show how you put the 10 stop ND on ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

I know the feeling when conditions are great. You just want to rush an not let it go by but by doing so missing a lot of opportunities. I usually slow down when I've got my first good image on my SD card.

Oh and that last shot is great as well. I'd go for the green one. Love the subtile colors and tones.

  5. Hi Thomas, hope you're doing well. Quick question: why did you sold the Ford campervan? And why are you going with and older generation campervan which you need to convert it yourself, etc. ? Thanks and keep up this videos. When I can get out to shoot, I watch your videos ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. I wish it was a choice between contrasty Vs soft, but for me this time it's a choice between colour and black and white. I cannot see that scene in B&W, it's either too soft still for b&w, or the subject has too small details that my eyes get lost in, as they all stand out. There is a lot of charm in the colour for me this time!

  7. Hey there, Thomas… Ah yes… I was going to ask you if you were shooting raw, as you mentioned that you had shot it in monochrome. I think that, between the two images that you show us at the end, colour and mono… I like the mono better. HOWEVER, if you had "dehazed" JUST the foreground in front of the tree, it would have pulled it out just a tad.
LOVELY shots though and I'm so happy for you that you got out n about in such a lovely spot. Cheers, bro!

  8. Hello there!

If you could it would be interesting to hear about your new car, your Mitsubishi? In times of lock down it could be an interesting video, I think. Perhaps an update on your camera bag?

    Keep up the good work.
