In this smudge painting or oil painting or cartoon type painting whatever you wanna call it tutorial, i will show you how you can get this effect done without some crazy painting skills.

i have seen a lot of this smudge painting effect tutorials but most of them use actual smudge tool which can be pretty heavy on system and dose not have much control, plus some directly paint suing brush tool which can be really tough for beginners (even i suck at that ๐Ÿ˜€ )

we will use only one single tool, which is mixer brush tool. you will need at least photoshop cs6 for this tool so sorry to the people using older versions.

Also we will do some camera raw editing to prepare image for effect and then after when its done we will also apply some adjustment layers to finish it and it one of the easiest method i could think of.

So, I hope you learned something from this photoshop tutorial and as always if you have any questions feel free to ask me in the comments, and have some fun with photoshop ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. thanks so much for this tutorial, learnt a lot! please could you do a tutorial on using the pixelbender for filters? i went to the link you put up for the oil paint filter, but i dont understand how the download works

  2. Its a very helpful video for me. However, my mixer brush tool always brush white color. I saw your brush is clear but it does not happing with me like you. Please help me to resolve this problem. Thanks.

  3. This is one of the best tutorials I've watched. Bonus points for talking and not using music. There are too many of those and often leave pertinent information out. I need to hear a human speak and walk through all the steps to properly learn. Thank you for that alone. You sound like a fun and nice person, also a bonus. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you for making this so easy and fun to watch and learn. I can honestly say that I've learned more in this video alone than I have watching the last 100+. I look forward to watching more from you. ๐Ÿ™‚
