Sony Announces the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Full-Frame Zoom Lens

Pushed as the lightest and smallest in its class, Sony has introduced their 23rd full-frame lens in just four years, the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS zoom lens.

The Sony 24-105mm f/4 features 14 groups comprised of 17 elements, 4 of which are aspherical and 3 which are extra-low dispersion. The front element also utilizes a fluorine coating. The lens weighs 23.4 ounces alone, and when combined with the newly announced a7R III, the total is a travel-friendly 42.6 ounces.

As the name suggests, the lens has a constant f/4 aperture throughout the focal range and sports Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. Note that this is a “G” lens, not to be confused with the premium Sony line of “G Master.”

According to Sony, the lens has fast, precise, and quiet autofocusing thanks to the direct drive SSM. They also mentioned that focus ramping and focus breathing have been minimized, and that there is greater responsiveness for manual focusing.

During the reveal of this lens, Sony was determined to prove the corner to corner sharpness that the new lens produces. After countless MTF charts of comparisons, it was quite convincing and I look forward to testing the claims with real-world shooting.

The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS zoom lens will retail for $1,299.99 and start preorders on October 26 at 10 a.m. EDT. The lens is expected to ship to customers on November 30.
