CGC Members can submit their exercise here: https://cgcookie.com/exercise/texture-painting-an-ax
This exercise is designed to be a sandbox for texture painting. In the Fundamentals of Texturing course ( https://cgcookie.com/course/introduction-to-texturing ), you learned the essential skills needed for unwrapping a model’s UV’s and painting a texture for it. Now for this exercise, the challenge is to apply that knowledge to paint a stylized ax! Don’t rely on image textures for this one. Your submission should be painted by hand. If you need to brush up on your digital painting skills before getting started, review the Concept Art Fundamentals learning flow.

My first time texture painting! https://imgur.com/a/2p66ClL
I have been using blender on and off for a few years, and already in the first 3 minutes I learned how to better unwrap my objects, thank you sir!
It's all the little things that I literally have never noticed of heard of before that make this tutorial really good
Would it be a good idea to do something like normal and reflection maps on hand-painted textures?
Damn, I watched this whole thing and I was so amazed by your work that almost 30 minutes passed by and it felt like 10 minutes!
2:11 you can just unwrap mirrored mesh, so after applying modifier — all UV's would be perfectly match 😉
Very, very helpful, Thank You!
Great advice!
Great tutorial finally someone explains this step by step
I really like your style of art!
Really cool and useful. I would like to see more 3D hand-painted stuff from CG Cookie. I was a citizen for some months, totally worth it!
thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge great work my friend keep it up!
Great work! Thanks!
Thanks. Learned something new. All the best.
This looks amazing. Mine looks like crap.
А как же addon для показа клавиш ? 🙁
This is amazing.
Right about 20:45 when you were painting the dents and cracks my brain took a second and then suddenly switched to seeing those as 3D shading instead of just color. Crazy!
I'd argue you could have gotten better utilization with a 256×1024 texture instead (and you'd only need 2 pixels of padding – this MAY affect performance in extreme cases but we're talking such low resolution mip mapping won't generally affect performance noticeably anyway)
Thanks! I can't wait to start painting some textures instead of using images.
Scoore moore is talking about helping beginners!!!come on man…this skilled brush and habile gestures are only found in artists…i am only in the stage of the cube since the days of blender 2.45 (2004?)…never succeded a descent modeling or render…perhaps in another life…by the way…i am so impressed by the artist and teacher at the same time…thanx…🖒🖒🖒🖒
Dude, you are the best
best video on texture painting with blender
amazing tutorial but I have a one question. Why does this happeing to my painting 🙁 ? : https://zapodaj.net/171234fbb78e3.png.html
Is it me or does this guy try to throw too many shortcuts at you in 1 video? If this is the first time you're trying to texture paint do you really think the best way about going about it is saying 10-15 different shortcuts in a 5 minute span? Blenders already insane as it is with the 1.4 trillion shortcuts there are.
how to get the view on the left side
ctrl l does not do anything for me
even though i respect your intention to help people learning this stuff it was lacking alot of informations for me
hope this comment can help you improve for the future have a nice day
My blender crashes when I try to paint in the 3d texture viewport what do I do? I have blender 2.79
can I add normal map while painting so I could easily see the area where the need to have shadow or highlight?
congratulations for the video but I have a question. after closing and reopening the blender, the uv I colored is gone. precise that I am Italian and my English sucks and then maybe I missed a ride. but what should I do to save the work done? if you save the image then it is no longer editable.
very nice tutorial! thank you!
