The Benefits of Photographing the Same Location Multiple Times

It can be tempting to constantly try to find new locations in which to shoot, but that can be both tedious and exhausting. Furthermore, you can get a lot more out of a location than you might think you can, and it can be well worth revisiting the same spot more than once. This great video examines why you might want to start going back to places in which you’ve already shot.

Coming to you from Steve O’Nions, this awesome video follows him as he discusses why one might want to shoot a location on multiple occasions. Though O’Nions is speaking specifically to landscape photographers, the general idea really resonates across genres. On the most fundamental level, conditions and seasons change, and the same location can look quite different on various days. On a deeper level, though, I think it’s a great idea simply because shooting the same subject will train your eye to find different angles, experiment with compositions, and generally expand your artistic capabilities. Personally, I tend to shoot in the same 10 or so spots quite a bit, and while I enjoy finding new locations, I find that I tend to make the most progress at my regular locations. Check out the video above for O’Nions’ full thoughts.
