The Opensource.com preview for March

March holds great things for readers as we kick off our Raspberry Pi series and celebrate Pi Day on 3/14!

Raspberry Pi series

A Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized computer originally designed for education, inspired by the 1981 BBC Micro. Creator Eben Upton’s goal was to create a low-cost device that would improve programming skills and hardware understanding at the pre-university level. But thanks to its small size and accessible price, it was quickly adopted by tinkerers, makers, and electronics enthusiasts for projects that require more than a basic microcontroller (such as Arduino devices). Read more at our What is Raspberry Pi? resource page.

Start reading the still-relevant and fun projects we shared last year, and see everything we’ve ever written about the Raspberry Pi in this collection.

The Arduino is another rad piece of hardware—learn more about it at our What is Arduino? resource page, and celebrate Arduino Day on April 1.

SCALE 15x

We’re headed to the largest community-run open source and free software conference in North America: Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE). In our series, we hear from SCALE 15x speakers on the topics they’ll present from March 2-5, 2017, in Pasadena. Read from the series.

Programming

Want to read more about programming from us? In April, we’re working on a great series for you about hot topics from the wonderful world of open source programming. If you’d like to propose an article, email us at open@opensource.com.

Open Source Yearbook

If you haven’t heard about our second annual Open Source Yearbook, you’ve been living under a rock. This collaboration with open source communities to collect a diverse range of stories from the year is a labor of love we freely give as a PDF download to our readers. Enjoy!

The Open Organization

The open organization community will be busy this month! The ambassadors continue to refine The Open Organization Definition—even as they share new and exciting stories. In March, Huiren Woo brings us an interview with Crayon CEO and entrepreneur Suresh V. Shankar, who shares his tips for building innovative organizational cultures. Jen Kelchner explains why she founded a consulting firm on open principles, and Ron McFarland walks us through the ins and outs of open decision-making. We’ll also publish the next installment of DeLisa Alexander’s series on open leadership development.

Plus, a little birdie tells me that the community is preparing for its first #OpenOrgChat Twitter chat of 2017! Stay tuned for more details.
