The Truth about Photography: Telling it like it is to Photography Students

How many of you remember sitting in high school or college right around graduation time and someone came to speak to you about the “real world”? I was asked a few months ago to speak to the entire photography class, some kids were days away from graduating and others still had one more year.

As always they told me to do whatever I wanted which could be a good and bad thing depending on my mood. But I can tell you I kept it pretty clean and mostly PG 13.

What can I tell these students that will resonate with them in their photography life? Can I tell them that most of the kids I graduated with ended up not becoming photographers? That is a true statement and I think it had to be said. If you never face the truth about photography you will be blindsided by how hard it is to make it.

  1. Public speaking is not easy for everyone, it can get very stressful and nerve-wracking pretty quickly. You go to put on your best performance and make a great speech but then you start getting nervous and your heart races and then you start to forget what to say and how to say it. So you then just keep pushing forward trying to do your best. Jared is a good guy, I have a lot of respect for him. He goes out of his way all the time to help other photographers out. That's all he's doing here, having fun with the crowd making them laugh but also giving them advice for the future to help them do what they love and be great at it. I've learned so much from watching Jared' s videos and it's helping me so much right now. I wouldn't have progressed as much as I have if it wasn't for Jared. I will continue to watch them no matter what. Being a photographer isn't easy and your definitely not always going to hit your target. Even the best ones have their bad days. But Jared, he puts his heart into his work and he does have a ton of good photo's. But I'm sure he's got his bad ones too, I know I do. Don't judge a man just because of his speech and the way he explains things, he did his best and I'm sure he's proud of him self. All these negative comments aren't right, show some respect for the man. He's only doing what he loves and helping others the best he can while doing it. Keep up all the good work Jared and don't let all this negativity get to you. Your a good man with a big heart. My condolences to your mother, I'm sorry for your loss, she seemed like a great person.

  2. these cats look like paying att to the fro. The fro while mkn some viewers uncomfy, explains his mind. We all have heard other pros and everybodys got different opinion and approaches.

  3. First time I have sat through an entire lecture. Love the advice given here, it was helpful and enlightening. I have been taking photos since I was 9 and been trying get out there. These gave me a blunt ass response that I needed to hear. Plus few things I have heard before but this confirmed it for me. Thank you.

  4. Thank you for the tip;) I'm 14 and I'm deciding to become a photographer, but I'm stranded by the composition, lighting, and the post processing… it really opens a door for me with the lecture about "telling a story"

  5. If you don't know hat you are seeing in an image. Spraying and praying is great if you are not sure 'what you want'. Later, when you view your work you will what you missed, or what could have been your focus. You may even have images that can be edited into great shots. The truth is, if you shoot nothing, you get nothing.

  6. Can you make money being a sports photographer for mags like Sports Illustrated when there are no more newspapers or publications? I see photographers on the sidlines at NFL games and I wonder who uses their photos if anyone does at all.

  7. The problem with this video is this: When he does website critique he quite rightly states that you should show your best work, get to the point, have a plan and not be redundant.

Unfortunately he doesn't stick to these truths when lecturing (or rambling). Still a great photographer and an interesting person, but maybe cutting the talk down to 20 minutes and then letting the kids run off to take their own photos would have been more successful.

  8. I really got to know many things about photography and dealing with it.I am an amateur photographer & I've learnt a lot from sir Jared's videos about "How to" &5min portrait……………….And what I think is that I have really ameliorated since I am watch his videos.

  9. how the fuck are you going to bash a guy who is clearly an established, and known photographer who is giving you over an hour and a half of nothing but information, whether you think its bad or not, it's free and useful.
