This second tutorial in the Unity 3D Tutorials Getting Started in Game Development series demonstrates the Blender interface and how to use some basic modeling tools. We will use these tools to model our character in the following tutorial. Developing assets in 3D modeling applications is a vital step in the game development pipeline. Most assets in a Unity game need to be created outside Unity3D and imported.

The Unity 3D Tutorials Getting Started in Game Development series is a gentle introduction to the process and workflow of game development using Blender and Unity 3D. It allows those new to game development to learn about the tools used to develop content for 3D games and to use those assets in a popular game engine. The series is deliberately very simple so that the learner can work through the entire process from designing a character to controlling the character model in a typical game scene in only a few hours.

We have chosen software that the learner can use for free. GIMP is an open source graphics program which, while not as full-featured as the industry standard Adobe Photoshop, is still very adequate for the tasks we will be using it for. Blender is an open source 3D application which is very full-featured and powerful. We will be using it for modelling, rigging, animation and partly for texturing our character model. Assets created in Blender can easily be exported to the Unity game engine. Unity is a popular game engine and editing environment with a free version that allows publishing to several platforms. This getting started series will not include significant gameplay, but will demonstrate controlling the player character through Unity components and some basic scripting.

Further series are in development that will explore the game design and game development process in greater depth, and also address specific aspects of the pipeline such as modelling, texture painting and scripting. Meanwhile the Getting Started series should show you how easy it is to develop a game using GIMP, Blender and Unity 3D.
