Welcome to Varomix Trix, in this series I’ll show you tricks that I’ve learned along the way in my career, some are really simple but I think all of them will be useful.

In this lesson we’ll learn about the different Render Engines available for Houdini, what do I think about them and which one do I think is the BEST for Houdini, you have to watch to find out.

  1. Regarding the section on Octane pricing: there is a rental option for $20/month that gets you every single plugin. That makes Octane one of the most affordable renderers on the market.

  2. I dont think i would consider vray the cheaper option compared to redshift, especially considering redshift gives you a permanent licence for versions upto the mainteanance period and all the DCC plugins, Not a bad price though. I especially like the monthly subscription which is a decent for someone whos main renderer is something else and may need a license for a one time project.

  3. The huge downside to Mantra is because it is only for Houdini there is very little information out there for how to use it, paid or free. Since Houdini has been mostly used for VFX/destruction there is nothing at all out there on how to render characters or how to use the Mantra skin shader. Compare with Arnold or Octane where there are hundreds of tutorials on how to render characters, skin, hair, etc.
