Hi, this is a tutorial on how to make a simple IK rig by adding some joints, an IK handle and some control curves with constraints. Stay tuned for some more tutorials on the way 😀

Thanks..
I'm using Maya 2017, and I'm having trouble when I'm creating the point constrain in the 2nd curve. If I move the IK handle, it works perfectly, once I constrain the curve, the IK handle stops working properly and moves slightly only.
Any idea how to fix?
Followed what you did but my mesh are not able to bend. I already slightly move the middle joint. I've insert my ikhandle and tested it. After binding, mesh just won't bend.
This tutorial is the most helpful and accurate tutorial I've seen yet, even for a 6 year old video.
It doesn't bend but just scales down and twists. What am I doing wrong? :S
Thanks for the tutorial will watch again
nice video and well explained 🙂
maybe make an annotation for the rotate plane problem with the IK handle. that way people that follow your tutorial dont also have to redo everything 😀

The explanation was fast and in a simplest way. Thanks!
You explained it in 10 minutes what took my teacher to teach in 10, I am impressed. Such clarity.
this is a really nice intro to the basics of rigging. Many thanks!
it doesnt bend im not sure why.
thanks for making an awesome tutorial!
FINALLY! somebody who speaks proper english and makes sense.
Thank you.
Thank you !
umm i rig up my cylinder but it dosent bend at the center =/ i move the ik and it just rotates the whole object and i cant find any help here =//
great 🙂
Great tutorial! exactly what I was looking for
Thank you for the tutorial that involved using IK on Arm! Super useful! I am not sure if would I need a form of IK on a main body of a character, let say? I can see how it is useful for the leg, feet and arm.
thanks for this!
Hi. Great tut.
I just learned how to build stuff, now I'm trying to comprehand rigging and I'm stuck on this:
I'm having trouble binding the joint to the cylinder. I set the IK>test it> select jonts>select my cylinder>skin>smooth bind. Than I move the wrist and the elbow bends along with it, but the object itself doesn't. What did I do wrong? I read comments but still can't figure it out.Help please (epic "dying-dragon-sean-connery" voice)
okay everything works great up till the pole vector, im using a 2014 version of maya, and i double click on the Ik icon on the panel, but the current solver is either Single chain or rotate plane solver, either option gives me the same problem. is there and extra step im missing?
Changed to Rotate-PlaneSolver and still the same error. Thanks though.
when I move last joint this happens:
Only the last group of plygons move
– – – – – – – – – This is poly tube, each – is poly division
– – – – – – – – * Only the * part of the tube moves ?!
hour awesome man that was cool
When I do this for an arm the arm gets positioned backwards. like the elbow bends the wrong way
This video made more sense than my 11 week rigging class. Thank you so much!
very skilful wow much appreciated such talent in teaching 😀 ty
thanks!!
very useful
Thank you so much.
I had the same error when you tried to use Pole Vector with IKhandles.
I finally got it that you should select the curve thing first then IK. God damn haha
Hi James,
Not the constraints but the different type of controls. Like for the eyes, feet, joints etc.
Thanks,
Mike
Sure, what do you mean by "rig control type"? the constraints or something else?
Thanks James,
Worked like a charme !
Do tou think you can do a tutorial on rig control types and how to use them ?
Thanks again,
Mike
Hi, iff the polygon mesh doesnt follow it probably meant its not skinned to the joints, so select the top joint, shift select the mesh, then go to skin > bind skin > smoothskin > click the box to the right of smooth skin to get the options and make sure bind to is set to hierarchy.
Hi James,
Great tutorial. Just a question from e newbee, When I move the control the joint bends but the polygon doesn't. Where did I go wrong ?
Thanks,
Mike
When I try to do the pole vector it says "line 0: Handle must be valid and use rotate plane solver". I set it to ikRP in the tool settings but it still does it.
Can anyone help please?
