Yesterday I posted Episode 2, Season 2 of the Artist Series which is a film on photographer David Brookover. David is one of the best landscape photographers working today and it was an honor to include him in the Artist Series.
This is a behind-the-scenes view of how I filmed it.

My name is Ted Forbes and I make videos about photography. I’ve been making photographs most of my life and I have a tremendously deep passion for photography that I want to share with you on YouTube.
The Art of Photography is my channel and I produce photography videos to provide a 360 degree look into the world of making images. We all want to get better so lets do this together!
I make videos covering famous photographers, photography techniques, composition, the history of photography, philosophy and much more.
I also have a strong community of photographers who watch the show and we frequently do social media challenges for photographers to submit their own work. I feature the best and most interesting on the show when we do these so come check it out and get involved!

Check out David Brookover's Artist Series video here -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNaDXJYzN3c
I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to download all the videos from the Artist series and put them in folders in an external hard-drive, so I can watch them whenever I feel down. I'm NOT going to sell, or even pass them to other people. It's just for me, and me alone.
I am so far behind with videos at the moment (far too much time in the darkroom since getting home, cough), Davids has been my favourite of the artist series so far. It has been so great to help fund a bunch of work that matters.
Lovely post! Thanks!
I enjoy these behind the scenes as much as the actual production.
Your knowledge and love of photography really shine through.
Thank you for this and all the other videos i am working my way through.
You're right on the money with the digital negative. We use an inkjet printer to make the negative at the same size as the final print. We'll go through the whole process with you when you come down and visit for a while 🙂
All David's Pt/Pd prints are actually pure palladium, which makes for a bit warmer print, with beautiful tonal graduation.
Fantastic 🙂
Thank you for your chatty but interesting vlog…
Great as always. A video on the printing lab would be good. Cheers
I loved the video with David Brookover and this video is great as well. I would love to see a video of some of Hidden Light working with their platinum and palladium processes. Masters of printing are so important to our work. The new take on the more introspective thoughts from the artists is great!
Thanks for all you've done.
Interesting clip. Just wondering who printed David's book.
This made me want to go to Jackson Hole. Great video as always.
Hey Ted, I'd love to see a doco on the photo printing / development team. As someone from the digital generation, this is all pretty new to me and I think watching the experts would be an educational and fascinating experience
Can't fly a drone in the park,, probably not in the city either, Jesus Christ you cannot walk past many government BUILDINGs ( which in a way they all are) and use your cell phone to photograph the exterior art work so I dont think they want a drone flying around it's windows and roof. SO, YOU NEED TO fly it in your living room or back yard and then probably only until a neighbor complains,, so it's just like all freedoms that you think exist but don't,, like the as advertised freedom machine car you can buy complete with racing decals and off road equipment that you will not be free to go anywhere with AND CERTAINLY NOT FOR FREE!! SAME NO FREEDOM OF SPEACH BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT HAS DEFINED THINGS YOU CANNOT SAY OR YOU WILL BE ARRESTED FOR BREAKING ONE OF THE MANY LAWS THEY CREATED BY MANIPULATION….ITS A JOKE, A HUGE JOKE AND EVERY PRESIDENT A COMEDIAN.
I was ninja'd on this but honestly: FLG is stunning, the drive down 89A to Sedona is one for the record books, then you can bust a U turn and take 89 north to 64…Desert View Drive. A lifetime of photo ops within a half a day of Flagstaff; even the Maverik station at the western edge of town afforded me a nuclear sunset while feeding the 420 ponies some 91 octane. Oh yeah….almost forgot, Hidden Light LLC! A state of the art artisanal film and print studio inside of an old church with occasional bats in the belfry. Walking distance to Route 66. And Route 66 Brewing Company. Sorry for gushing, but the high desert really is that special. Would love to see your take on it.
Your artist series is fascinating, enjoying it so much! Would also love to see a 'Hidden Light' lab special! Thanks for all you are doing Ted, very inspiring!
Oh man you HAVE to do a video on Hidden Light, would be so interesting to see.
You remind me of my mentor in the 1980's, he loved his artistic angles regarding photography despite being a press photographer, his knowledge in photography was astounding, he used to tell me about printing processes in days gone by, and had a passion for printing on various fabrics ad materials.
Ted. Could you explain the difference between printing from a digital negative as opposed to using a jpeg or tiff?
great stuff. thanks Ted
Ted, if your travels bring you to Flagstaff, I'd be happy to take you out to see and photograph the local wildlife and natural beauty of northern AZ. No drone bans, here 🙂
I've been to Jackson Hole for a ski week, we drove so I didn't get to see the mountains from above, but the view from the ground is also very beautiful.
I took a Platinum Palladium course in the UK so I can relate to this video. I had an amazing time and whilst I didn't pursue it further at home, I did learn to appreciate prints as beautiful objects. Since then I took up silver gelatin printing and have my own relatively minimalist darkroom. The film community has been amazing and those involved are always willing to donate time, energy or old darkroom equipment.
Thanks so much for putting these videos together.
